Absinthe - For All you Europeans Around Here ;)
Have any of you tried absinthe? What did you think? Like? Dislike? What are your thoughts on absinthe in general?

I liked it, but a friend of mine who drank it with me said it tasted like gasoline mixed with soda water. He didn't like it.
I can tell you that of all the drinks out there, Absinthe is one of the few that can easily knock you on your ass with your third shot. Not a drink for the faint of heart, to be sure!

Generally I hear bad things about it, but Oscar Wilde drank it, so...

I felt a muscle in my face twitch when I read the title of this post. True story.
![]() I've never tried it myself, but I've definitely heard that it's a pretty rough drink. Some of the actors that I know/knew loved it, but supposedly only drank it at parties because it could become extremely addictive. I dunno if they were just messing with me or telling the truth ![]() |

I've never had it, but it's one of those things I've always wanted to try. I was surprised to learn that apparently it's legal to drink it in America, even though it's illegal to sell.

I first met the green fairy in Canada, after my cousin brought back a bottle wth him.
And yes, its a very addicting drink, and potent. Kiss your liver goodbye.

I thought it was illegal because it was so dangerous?
It does have an interesting history though. My history teacher always used that as an example of the deterioration (do you spell it like that?) of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. Truth be told, he had a lot of those examples, not all of them very factlike, but he was cool.

And while I love Oscar Wilde,
I'm not sure we should be getting our drinking habits from him kwim?
course I don't happen to be European, of age, or blue. so I don't really think I'm a qualified consultant on absinthe. And you know, I was going to search it on google, and I had trouble with finding an english page ![]() |

![]() To try true absinthe was upon my new year's resolutions list for this year of 2007, which I even posted here on entmoot; to date I'm still nowhere close to getting a swiff of true absinthe. Gotta be in europe and be in the know, while in europe, to get the real thing, and not some nasty fugazi knockoff. The real thing, it's not just booze, people, it's drugs married to booze in this srange and crazy way, something about wormwood, somethingsomething... I must try it. Someday I will; I'm not in any huge hurry 'cause good things come to those who wait... ![]()

Most of the stuff they sell these days is minus the stuff that makes it fairly hallucinogenic - so... it's fairly harmless, if a strong alcohol. I've had the real deal, and it's a kick, that's for sure. Absolutely gross tasting. Very bitter. Ugh.

Oh, I don't care about the gross and the bitter! The key, important words you mentioned, BoP would be "fairly" and "hallucinogenic;" yeah baby. Who drinks absinthe for the taste? It's for the effect, my lovelies, yes, yessss....
oh, yesss...

![]() But, as was said, the "hallucinogenic" properties were caused by impurities in older manufacturing methods. You can eat ryebread these days without tripping from Ergotism, too. ![]() |

Liked it. No sugar whatsoever; bitter taste is good. No hallucinations to report either... Quote:

Oh, but you see, with Absinthe, burnt is a flavor.
