Re: Beowulf
He's referring to a new translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic, this time by Seamus Heany. My mom read it and said it was good, but I seriously doubt you'll be able to get through it . (Prove me wrong )

Re: Beowulf
It's the new one, at the top of the bestseller lists. I managed to get through it, and enjoyed it a lot. I suppose you could say it's the first English fantasy novel!

Re: Beowulf
Hello, this is my first post here,
The Heaney translation is A1, and well worth a look. I tried to read Beowulf years ago but the translation I had then was like trying to walk through knee-high porridge. Then my girlfriend got me the Heaney version. It is a tale-and-a-half! So yes, read it! |

Re: Beowulf
Reading this new translation, I was amazed at how much of The Hobbit was influenced by Beowulf, especially the dragon scene. It was as if Tolkien took the generic treasure-guarding dragon of Beowulf and gave him a personality. Perhaps the early genesis of The Hobbit was part of Tolkien's famous effort to popularize Beowulf.

Re: Beowulf
No, he didn't get past Page 6. Then again, I never got around to reading it either, and it was returned to the library.
