Kate Rusby
I've just bought a CD of Kate Rusby's- Little Lights. I bought it four days ago, I think, and have probably listened to it over fifty times. What a greast voice!! I am totally in love with Irish and folk-ish type music, and this girl tops the charts! I actually had a Cathi Ryan CD in my hand, and happened to pick up Little Lights and sampled it- and consequently put Cathi back on the shelf. Does anybody else go in for this kind of music- if so, what do you think about Kate Rusby?

I think she's got a wonderful voice. I actually saw her play live quite recently, and she was very good. Little Lights is my favourite album, too, though it's hard to choose one! I'd definitely recommend her newest album, Underneath the Stars, if you can find it, though folk music can be hard to get hold of where I am

Curiously enough (
![]() ![]() Overall however, I find her a little samey. I suppose it is partly the curse of acoustic music, but there seems to be very little variation.

I love William and Davy, and... well, I might as well just generalize and say I love all the songs on Little Lights. About her music being 'samey', I see what you mean. Most of the time I don't like that, but, then, sometimes you just can't have too much of a good thing. SOMETIMES. Is her accent really that different when she's not singing? I'd love to hear her 'non-singing' voice, but I doubt she'd ever come to my part of the Yoo Ess of Aye. I live in the boonies.

I'm afraid her accent is that different. Just pretend I said nothing, you won't ever hear her, and no-one's allusions are blown...

Oh, but I love accents. I think I'd like hers- but then I've never heard it, so... there I am.

If you like Kate Rusby, I recommend Cara Dillon (an Irish singer) and Eliza Carthy as being in a similar style. Both are very good.

I dunno, that because cities are close to each other that they have similar accents... actually maybe it does... *shuts up*

You mentioned Cathi Ryan in your first post - what's her music like?

She's Irish, and pretty good. She does mostly Irish folk, and writes some of her own stuff. I saw her in concert once, and I liked the more acoustic feel of her music then- as opposed to when I listened to a CD of hers and found it's a lot more hyped up. She used to sing and play with Cherish the Ladies, a group which I don't really like as a whole, in the vocal department. They have a good blend of instruments, though. Um, Cathi Ryan... her voice is strong, but soft. I think she sounds a wee bit more formal than Kate R. Kate's a lot more comfy: 'fluffy couch with a few pillows and a hot cocoa'; whereas Cathi's more 'high-back armchair (no pillows) and a cup of tea.'
My sister gave me Kate Rusby in Concert; Live from Leeds for Christmas... Oh, just lovely! Janny- I love her voice. I think if I could have any accent in the world, it'd be a Barnsley.

I've always joked with myself that she should get into rock and call herself Kate Rugby

I recently saw the film Heartlands, which uses several Kate Rusby songs (mostly from her first album Sleepless) and tunes by John McCusker. They also both make an appearance in person playing a gig in a pub which the main character visits. I definitely recommend this film to Kate Rusby fans - it even contains lots of Yorkshire accents you might like, Rosie!
