Hobbit race

I have a very basic question.
Where do Hobbits come from?
We know the origins of all species (elves, men, dwarfs, orcs) but not of Hobbits.
Is it written anywhere in Tolkiens' material? or is it meant to be a mistery?

Some sort of varient of humans, I do not recall ever seeing anything about how the arose/differentiated from larger humans. Lots of speculative possibilities tere; make up your own story for them.

Yes, desended from men.

There were three different kinds of hobbit race before known as a common one (smeagel was one of these races many years ago).

The process from man to hobbit is not well known I dont think, at least Tolkien didnt go into it at any great detail.

It would make sense, maybe, if Hobbits were evil.. or ugly.. or resemble orcs in any way.

Carried on...

Dunedain
|
Men of the twilight
|
Ancient Hobbits
|
Harfoots - Fallohides - Stoors - ( Angle Stoors )
|
Modern Day Hobbits

I made a more detailed one carried on from Chrys's one.

The three bold ones are the old hobbit factions of spoke of. The forth in the brackets is a group of hobbits that stayed in the 'Angle' when the rest of the Stoors moved off.

+edit+ Lcog, the 'center' took works a charm by the way +edit+

It is supposition upon their part. Nor is it well founded. The idea that such a different subspecies would evolve in a few thousand years is right out.

Hobbits do not make sense in Tolkien's universe if we use our world logic. (Then again Shelob and Ungoliant were spiders beyond the size of men....) So I guess this worlds logic is not too important when figuring where the Hobbits came from. Most likely Tolkien had no good way of explaining how they came to be, when he first heard of Hobbits it was on a small scrap of papper that read "In a hole in the ground their lived a Hobbit...". Tolkien has hobbits nowhere else in his stories except The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The only hypothesis on where Hobbits came from is that they decended from men probably not even men of the Edain. From Tolkien's description I would think the __ would have had more in common(not only physically) with Hobbits then any race of the Edain. For example the Edain or Dunedain were quite tall... how could that type of man so quickly become so short and... less noble?

Commenting on the "center" button in a thread about Hobbits is off topic, spammy, and rude to boot.

Could one really claim that the Hobbits are less noble than the people of Gondor? In many ways (as much as I hate to admit it), they seem more so.

Well I understand what you are trying to say, Hobbits being "more" noble in a more Philosophical way. What I mean though is more physical and immediatly social. For example Hobbits in the Shire desire more peace, good tilled earth, weed, ale, and food. Men of dunedain, gondor, etc. have more worries and self accept those worries. Perhaps I should have said how could men like the Dunedain become so secluded like the Hobbits so quickly!?(not to mention the physical stature change mentioned before)
