Computor memory - having trouble with!!!
I was trying to transfer Piers Anthony's Incarnations septology from wordpad-doc:s to HTML-docs in notepad and after a while (that is after I had transferred the first book to the first HTML-doc. and began working on it.) kept getting a memory deficiency warning (in fact telling me to shut down programs). I actually thought that I had quite enough memory that is 112 mb ram.
The file in question is about 55 kb. NEED HELP!! |

What Operating System are you using?
How many applications do you have running at the same time? (Try closing down unneeded applications.) Have you tried: Saving your work at some point. Shut the computer down. Wait some time. (about 15-30 seconds) Restart the computer. Attempt your work again. ? You may also want to defragment your computer hard drive.

Yeah, I tried that but it objected again at the same place. You may also want to defragment your computer hard drive. That I haven't tried. Might do the trick. How much memory do you have? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Do you experience this problem at random, or only with the file you were working, and/or at a specific point? |

Is Notepad the culprit? Is the portion of the HD for this program to small to accept a file of 55 k's? Last edited by Grey_Wolf : 05-15-2004 at 03:19 AM. |

My initial impression is that a portion of that document is corrupt. If you are able to convert other documents of and to the same formats using the same app, then the problem is specific to this file, and not a general operating system (or application) problem and not necessarily a memory fault.
The best way to test this theory is to go through the same process on a friend's PC (or work PC), and see if it happens again. However, some operating systems act differently when they are faced with corrupt files. ME is a bit of a pain in this regard. |

Did you say your computer has 112 MB of RAM?
Also, I'm guessing that's 20 GB for that HDD. If you want to upgrade your RAM, it's quite easy... let me know if you want to know how. Anduril is correct... MS WinME is a piece of proverbial crap. Suggestion: dual boot with a Linux operating system. Linux operating systems manage memory much better. However, it's quit possible, as Anduril said, that it's the document you are working with... since it happens at the same place each time. Last edited by Ruinel : 05-15-2004 at 09:17 AM. |

No problem at all.
As for the Linux operating system, it will depend on which version you download as to how much space it takes up. You want to make a partition that is separate for the Linux operating system before you do so, though... and you should have WinME on a separate partition as well.
