I reckon Beorn will make an appearance of some sort, but the farmyard animals serving tea and cakes will be rightly consigned to the ether.

I'm guessing Beorn's shoved towards the second movie so he won't be in this trailer. (I'm kind of hoping the farm animals will be there too.) But we know Beorn has to be there in some capacity since they got an actor for him.

I agree Rian.
Do we know when they are going to end the first film? Battle of the Five Armies? |

Looks good! I'm looking forward to the movies.
Gaffer - I'd think the Battle of Five Armies is way too late. I thought they abandonded the idea of the second movie consisting of events between The Hobbit and LOTR (it'd probably be a sleeper). I wonder if they might end it with the Dwarves in the captivity of the Wood Elves. I thought before maybe after the rescue by the Eagles (where I see Bilbo and Dwarves waking up in an erie similar to Frodo & Sam to start Two Towers) - but I think that's too soon. So I'm guessing Wood Elves.

I see your point. They need to keep something in the tank for the second movie, or else make up a whole bunch of stuff that will send the likes of us into a rage.
What about the death of Smaug? That would give you a great climax, and keep the Battle for movie 2. Maybe the Necromancer stuff could move centre stage for that, with bits of The Hunt for the Ring, or summat. Part of me thinks that Jackson will not be able to resist bringing the Nazgul into the mix at some point. |

Smaug is entirely absent from the trailer, that to me says we won't be getting a glimpse of him any time soon. My guess is that the movie stops not too long after Bilbo finding the Ring as that is included in the trailer, possibly before the Eagles (since they are not).
The Rivendell chapter is obviously expanded considerably. I suspect they will use it to tie in the White Council /Dol Guldur story-line. It would make sense to do so too, narratively speaking. Judging by that short glimpse of armed Elves on horseback surrounding the Dwarves, I guess there will be no singing, silly Rivendell Elves like in the book. Ah well, Hugo Weaving's perpetual frown won't look so out of place then.

TWO, TWO; TWO MOVIES NOT ONE! That could be good, but I need to know if Tom Bombadil makes it into either one.

Well, he's definitely not in the trailer either, so if he's in it, he'd probably be in the second movie too.

I want Tom Bombadil, the Scouring of the Shire, and Saruman's dissolution exactly as depicted in the text. Else, why bother? Anyone can make a Hollywood version (cf. The latest disasters in Narnia-Hollywood land).

We are talking Hollywood, right? You purists are so troublesome!

Just love how the song "Misty Mountains Cold" is sung! I really hope that they sing the whole thing. Can't get enough!

It's funny but I had expected it to be a more lively, catchy tune when reading it in the book. In the trailer it sounds a bit dark and foreboding. But I guess that's more in tune with the style of the LoTR movies.

I think it accentuates a tragic exiled existance of Erebor's dwarves.
After all the book, supposedly, was written by a cheerful hobbit, who did not think much about dwarve's underlying reasons for taking such long and dangerous journey.

Agree with you. Liked it instantly, because it gives an impression that in the movie the whole story won't be lightly threaded and we will see more tangible connections to the elusive history of Middle Earth.
