Aragorn fights the Troll.
I just saw the Appendices on the EE's and i only just found out about the troll Aragorn fights in rotk (at the black gate). anyway, for those who don't know, Aragorn was originally going to be fighting Sauron. Peter Jackson thought this would have made Aragorn too much of a hero and take focus away from Frodo, so he changed Sauron into a troll.
Whats everyones opinions, do you think Aragorn should have fought the troll or Sauron? |

he may as well (pj that is) have had him fought the wicked witch of the west, or godzilla ... for all the relevancy of the question...
in the book sauron was in baradur when the ring was cast into the fire... if pj didn't want aragorn to be so much of a hero why mangle the book to have him fight sauron? don't make any sense .... mind, hollywood execs spring to mind... why not have him fight elrond? I agree with Gor. The best thing to happen would have been to have Merry at Minas Tirith and have Pippin and Beregond fighting the troll.

The hobbits got no glory at all really, just used a bunch of extra baggage and occasional comic relief in these films, same with gimli...

He's right. All the action and heroism (as in battle heroism) was given to Aragorn, Legolas and slightly Gandalf.

At this point, I look at the film and say, "why did they waste all that money one extras" they way that it always focused on the three abov mentioned characters...I wouldnt have been surprised if pj tried to cut out boromir, gimli and merry all together, if it wouldnt have damaged movie sales.

The main reason i wanted to see Sauron fighting Aragorn is because it would be cool. I think they should have left him fight the troll, but put in the Sauron scene as a deleted scene.
I just think it would have been nice to watch... |

IMO, it was fine the way it was. To have him fight Sauron would have ended the movie at that point and the rest of the filming would have been, to use a pun, other than notlob, Moot.

The Aragorn vs. Sauron battle would have been cool; it would have been a great way to do the Palantir scene...as it was, the troll was pretty good. It kind of symbolized the entire conflict: as Frodo is tempted at the brink of Doom(no pun intended), Aragorn is nearly trodden underfoot. Then, he comes from underneath as the Ring is destroyed.

I've watched this scene closely several times. I think it was an interesting idea-- to have Sauron suddenly appear as this glowing angel type person (as he used to be in one of his bodies-- when he convinced the elves and Numenoreans he was their friend), but it would also be extremely weird, especially for people who are fanatic about sticking to the book. I can understand why they cut out Sauron and pasted in a troll, but I think it would have been better to reshoot it and just have him heroically fighting various orcs and things.
In some ways Aragorn's troll-duel detracted from the Mount Doom Moment, but in some ways it increased the tension to have so many cuts back and forth. I certainly wasn't all that concerned about Aragorn when I watched it -- the Ring situation was much more vital. But it did prolong the suspense, so I guess that's good. |

Y'all are far too hard on PJ, had he truly been ratings-driven, he'd have had Arwen fight Eowyn.

I heard a rumor that there was a scene with Arwen fighting, but dropped it when the bookfans had a cow. I don't know the reason why he dropped the Scoring of the Shire scene. Back on topic now: the Aragorn/Troll duel did create a lot of suspense as Frodo and Gollum are fighting over the Ring before it is destroyed.

She was going to be in Helm's Deep. I'm really glad they took that out.
