Alternative Universes

Are there any "alternative universes" an author has created besides Middle Earth? I don't believe I've heard of a world created in fiction that is in such precise detail and thought out as middle earth...

I think this is a hard question to answer, especially when it comes to authors. I think we can look at someone like Gene Roddenberry who created many alternative or parallel universes within a story. I would classify him as a genius. [I happened to meet him and shake his hand btw] But as far as authors, I don't think there have been any that have been able to create such a tale on a fantasy level and at the same time be able to inner-twine the real world within it as Tolkien did. He was truly unique.

Yes I did. Many years ago. And yes if you wish. What flavor jam do you prefer?

Well, I think that's why she's adding jam.....

What about CS Lewis? He created Narnia after all. Okay, maybe not as complex as middle earth, but still a pretty cool place, nonetheless.

Oh, and there's always diskworld.

Hey Dylan, your as old as you feel, or as old as you smell. Boy am I in a wierd mood tonight. Why do you always have to bring up the age thing. How many times do I have to remind you that I am an elf. Age is no object.

I enjoyed Narnia as a fifth and sixth grader. Very entrancing place. Then when I discovered Tolkien, Narnia was practically nothing compared to it.

I've never read of a world quite as detailed (complex?) as M. Earth but David Eddings created a nice Universe in his most popular works (Belgariad + Mallorean).

Micheal Moorcock also created some rather good "worlds" in his Eternal Champion series of books (Elric, Corum et al)

yes, but I haven't heard of any as complex and detailed as Arda/Middle-Earth, I don't know of any other authors that spent a lifetime creating it... I think Tolkien was EXTREMELY unique in that.

What about Phillip Pullman? He created lots of worlds, though none with the history of ME.

Then there's Anne McCaffrey's Pern.

But as has been said, Tolkien was unique in his creation.

I'm loth to introduce this, but JK Rowling *did* create a pretty nifty little world in Harry Potter, or at least an underground society. Not to be compared with the splendor of Ea, of course... but it's something.
