Did Rowling know this?

A quote from my new encyclopedia on LotR that I got for christmas!!

Quote:
Dumbledors- In the playful Hobbit poem "Errantry" a part tells of a ferocious race of winged insects. They are named Dumbledors but nothing more is told of their origin and history.
Do you think she knew this?

No. I think she hadn't even read LotR before she wrote HP (only the Hobbit).

She said she named him Dumbledore cuz it's Latin for "bumblebee". Just proves they both like Latin.

ok - but still, if she did, you cannot do anything. (and i think she didn't. I like both of the books, LOTR and HP)

Dumbledor is old english for bumble bee. She is not copying Tolkien. Sheesh.

dumbledor

\Dum"ble*dor`\, n. [The first part is prob. of imitative origin. See Dor a beetle.] (Zo["o]l.) A bumblebee; also, a cockchafer. [Prov. Eng.]

Oh, and there's already a thread somewhere which discussed the etymology of Dumbledor. Use that search function sometime, huh?

"Dumbledore" is a name J. K. Rowling said she felt she knew, but couldn't remember where she had heard it, until a friend reminded her that they had walked in some sort of flower garden as children (my memory is hazy), and the flowers were called dumbledores.

I remember making this same mistake on the Dumbledore name

I'm also very relieved to discover that a cockchafer is a beetle

Ummm I think that Tolkiens Dumbledors are bees. "A ferocious race of winged insects"...yep sounds like a bee alright.
