Rugby World Cup 2003
Any other egg chasers in here? Since we've got a thread for the football world cup, I thought I'd open one for RWC 2003.
My prediction is for New Zealand to beat England in the final. NZ have the easiest draw, so the body count shouldn't be too high come the quarter finals. The Boks will lose hugely to England in the group stages but will nobble some of their key players. It would be good to see a northern hemisphere team win for a change, and England have a great chance, but I think the greater intensity of their group will tell on them. On recent form, my beloved Scotland will be doing well to get out of the group stage ![]() |

I hope the Irish do well, too, but they've got a hellish group. They've got to beat either Australia or Argentina just to get through, and the Pumas are looking a bit useful these days.
The scary thing about the All Blacks is that the players they haven't picked (Cullen, Mehrtens etc) could probably form a team and get to the final themselves. |

Can't get too excited about some tap-tackle tournament. Will probably go and see a couple of the Great Britain & Ireland v Australia rugby league test matches though.

England- tough draw, true, but I think they've got enough to pull it off.

Both Italy and Canada have now stated that they're going to field second XVs against New Zealand, so an even less taxing time is in prospect for them in the group stage. They don't play Wales until the last group game, so that'll be their first XV's warm-up for the Boks.
If England lose Johnson or Wilkinson to injury, their chances of winning will go at the same time. You couldn't say the same for NZ about any one player. |

Better bet would be to get a job as a waitress at their hotel and introduce a few exotic "ingredients" to their steak and kidney pies. However, presumable the Boks have already thought of that one...

The first round of matches out of the way and the body count is rising already. Looks like NZ have lost Umaga, Rocothingie's carrying a dodgy hamstring and both of England's scrum-halves are crocked. Australia's vice-captain was stretchered off unconscious in the first game.
This is probably good news for France, who have been the most impressive so far, I think. Hard to judge, though, since Italy put out their reserves against NZ. Don't mention Scotland, who were pish today. |

New Zealand are traditionally the best at rugby, but you're probably right.
Pish is a slang word for urine, used to describe something which is nonsense, useless or rubbish (in this case, all three). ![]() |

I meant that their performance was very poor: lots of mistakes and bad organisation. They were lucky to score that many points and Japan deserved a better result (the score was 32-11). On that showing, they can expect to get soundly humped by France and kicked out of the competition by Fiji, which would be a disaster (for us).
However, maybe Japan are better than I'm giving them credit for (clutching at straws here). Last edited by The Gaffer : 10-12-2003 at 05:58 PM. |

Well, time to boost me thread up the top. Group stages over, no surprises (except that Scotland are playing even worse than I feared) and Saturday's quarter finals are:
Australia v Scotland France v Ireland New Zealand v South Africa England v Wales The good news is that the NZ forwards are looking flimsy and so is England's boy wonder Wilkinson, so there might be a chance that the script gets rewritten here or in the semis. Special mention must go to Fiji for some really entertaining play and truly spectacular on-pitch thuggery. Also to Samoa for nearly knocking the wheels off England's chariot. |
