Where is this line in the book?
Help, please There's a scene that I like in TT, near the end (chpt 30 in the DVD), when Frodo and Sam are talking in the ruins of Osgiliath right after Frodo draws his sword on Sam, then drops it in horror at what he's done to his friend. Frodo says he can't go on, then Sam starts talking about the great stories, and Frodo asks "what are we holding on to, Sam?" and Sam answers "that there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for!"
I remember the "great stories" section in the books (but not where it was in the books - anyone remember?), but not Sam's last line - does anyone remember that line? (or maybe it's spoken by someone else?)

I believe that line is a Phillipa Boyens original. I'm quite sure Sam never says it- in the books (must add that out of difference to the people who think Jackson correctly interpreted the characters).

Yeah, I didn't remember that line in the books - but I think it's a good one - in keeping with the character and the story, IMO (unlike SOME of the lines they made up! )

I am pretty sure I remember reading a quote alongthose lines from Sam. It wasn't exactlly the same, Philipa I think took a little of what was written in the book and made more. I could be wrong though, I will post again once I get to it, I know that it is not before the chapter Helms Deep as it was the last I read in my anual LotR reading.

Ironically, I've always thought it sounded more like a President George W Bush line.

I was watching last week the 3rd DVD of TTT EE and Philippa Boyens explains that line.
She says that when they reached that point of the story Fran Walsh and her thought that it was a good momment to sume up all the story, so the copy the lines that Tolkien himself had said they were the core of the story: Frodo and Sam's parliament about "the stories". But when Walsh & Boyens reached the end of it they questioned themselves to what were the Hobbits "holding on". They got stuck till Boyens found that... crappy line BTW, what would you write if you were in their place?

Well, as I wouldn't have had Sam and Frodo stuck in Osgiliath, but rather had them walking to Cirith Ungol, I probably would have ended it with Sam asking "Hi Gollum! Do you think you're the hero or the- Now where's he gone off to?"

Isn't the 'great stories' part when Frodo and Sam are resting right before they go into Shelob's lair? I think that would place it in the 2nd last or last chapter if TTT (IIRC).

I can't really think of a place where they talk about WHY they're doing it. I guess it's just obvious to them that it's the thing to do, and they trust Gandalf.

Of course they would liked to help to fight for a best "world", but that's what the image of the Shire means in the book and I doubt they would have worded it otherwise.

I think Merry, Pip, and possible Frodo may have always thought about the shire but I think Sam always knew. He knew and understood what they were fighting for and he felt it was the time to explain it to Frodo. IT rreally helped the movie. I loved it and I thought it really summed it up. I declamed that little speech for my class once. (meaning I stood in front of the class and acted it out. We have to do it three times. And it counts as a grade on our report card.) I got an A+ and 4 people cried. Hey this is my 50th post. Yeah. Im an enting!!!! WEEEE!
