Are YOU a Sucker?

The reason I'm creating this thread is to make sure I'm not alone. The thing is, I can't say no to anyone. My friend is filming a short drama for her senior project as a film major. I got suckered into finding a cast for her. Since I couldn't, I'm now playing two parts. (Thankfully they're twins). I can't say no to anyone. For anything. If someone asks a favor of me, I just have to help them out.

So this is the Suckers' thread. SGH and her lackies can close it if they like, but at least let us form a support group for all the yes-people that the Moot must have.

More generally, what makes you pay the "stupid tax"? You know, the pointless things that only a stupid person would pay for, like willingly buying expensive clothes which advertise someone else's product for them? Or lottery tickets?

With me, it's stuff like getting a plumber round. I can never be arsed getting loads of quotes and usually just go with the first one to get it done asap. I'm sure I end up getting shafted every time but hey, life's too short.

i have a hard time saying no too... that said, i enjoy doing all kinds of things, so i'm usually not that bothered... the problem comes when i make too many commitments... i'm not the best with dates and times

i use to play in a few bands simultaneously a few years back and had more than one occasion where i booked a gig at two separate places on the same nite... so it would become my responsibility to find a backup for myself

after about ten years i finally forced myself to actually use the calendar i put up on the wall every january

i also made it a point to teach myself how to do plumbing, electricity and carpentry when i bought my house... i hate paying for something i could do myself if i put a little time into it

Yeah that one has always been high on my list of HOW CORPORATE AMERICA (or the UK) ZOMBIFIES US. Its like paying someone to spank you. Hey can i give you much more money than its worth for a t shirt with your company's logo on it so I can give you free advertising so that all my friends will want to buy your stuff too??? Brain washing pure and simple.

Oh, money's the worst. I can't ever say no to anyone. And I love giving people things, so I'm always fronting the bill when I go out with my friends.

And that buying stuff. Geez. What is it with people and brand names? Can't we just all enjoy nice patterns? How come no one sews anymore? I think I'm the only one of my group of firends that still sews.

But that's not the point. The point it, we're all gonna get suckered some day if we don't learn to say no to people...

We should have testimonials. Has anyone here gotten suckered by a friend?

Typically I'm the opposite. I say no waaay too much when maybe I should be saying yes. With money, though, I'm good. I do a lot of thrift-store shopping and such, because I just love how far fifteen bucks will go. Just say NO to department store prices and let your twenty buy you thrice as much!!

I resent that! Why does it have to be me and my lackies? I have no lackies. I am a lacky!. Was I just suckered in?

Being suckered in is a part of life, whether it be through friends, family, ads, whatever.

With family, you will give them money or whatever, because you feel obligated because they are family. That's what family is for. When you have been screwed over enough, it will end.

With friends, you do it because they are your friend and you hope that they would do the same if you needed it. Trouble is, is that you would pay them back and not ask every time you were in need, and would find other alternatives before going to them again, unless you were desperate. Not all friends are like that and take advantage, but some are.

Ads? ads are the easiest to get suckered into. It looks good. It sounds good, so buy it. Sales are great for suckering people in. Just always remember that the good deals out there are not always a good deal. Some? Yes. Most? No. You usually get what you pay for.

Two weeks ago, I got suckered into running in an election to be the Executive Director of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate. It took begging, pleading, an eleven-signature petition and a smile from a cute girl to convince me to give up a year of my life for a volunteer position managing a website and taking minutes at meetings on the other side of the country.

I won in a landslide. Don't bother with the congratulations - I don't think I got the most satisfaction out of the victory.

If nothing else, the "silver lining" here might be learning the beauty of saying NO!.... right at the start, so that *they* go to someone else! I bet you get more out of this though, for your trouble, you might meet some interesting people along the way. Enjoy the ride as best you can!

I'm sure I have been 'suckered' into things. I just can't think of any examples at the moment. But my friend does. She lends anyone money. She feels bad if she doesn't. A few weeks ago she gave a Big Issue guy a tenner. Now I would love to be able to give that much money to someone, but alas I am forever broke!

Hector, *sweet smile* have I told you how much I love you? And how your a brilliant friend and Queen - I mean President .
