I don't think Melkor gave them to her. She was fed other other Noldor jewels. He kept the Silmarils for himself.

That's correct. He had them hid behind his back. When she insisted on him giving them to her after he fed her the petty jewels, and he refused, that is when she grew large and was going to kill him, and then he cried out and the Balrogs came to his aid. He took the Silmarils and placed them in his Iron Crown.

Actually, she had grown large from draining the sap of the trees, and grew even larger after consuming the jewels from Formenos. Morgoth was giving those jewels out of his left hand, and the Silmarils were locked in a crystal casket in his right hand, which was burning him. Morgoth had also grown smaller as a result of the power he had disseminated.

I make jokes like that too, but in the interests of clarity, Ungoliant was an ally of Morgoth, not a vassal; she had become a "free agent" long before the assault upon the two trees. Morgoth had agreed to give to her whatever she desired, "Yea, even with both hands". In the far north, in the darkness, Ungoliant could tell that Morgoth was going to scamper and yet he had something from Formenos he had not given to her, and he only fed her jewel after jewel with his left hand. She reminded him of his promise to feed her with both hands. Morgoth did not feed her the Silmarils, he held them in his right hand (not behind his back). when she closed on him with webs of darkness, he screamed (and that land was named Lamedon thereafter for the echoes of his screame lived for many years) and Balrogs came and with scourges of flame drove her off their Master.

Does that clear things up?

A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless."
