Tater and Catholics...
I have noticed, in his many posts, that Tater seems to have some emnity for Catholics (I'm an agnostic so I really am just curious), so why is that?

I don't think he likes organized religion in general. When it comes to the Catholic Religion - he I thnk he feels it "hijacked" Christianity and converted it to it's own ends. But really - what religion hasn't been converted either by politics, within or from the practicioners?
Of course Tater will have to speak for himself.

That's strange. Of all the organised religions, Catholicism is the one I have the least problems with. 'Cept for the bits about birth control and stuff. I mean, they're pretty good about science, evolution, etc.

Aw, you noticed!
I have lots of issues, most with American Catholics. In general they tend to know very little about the history of their religion, thinking they're the original Christian church and stuff like that. They actually broke of from the Christian church in 1054 AD. Also, after Vatican's 1 and 2 they are basically a new age religion, considering they changed so much of the dogma of their religion. Oh, and there's also the fact that I live in Boston, pedophile priest capital of the world. |

Well, tater... I can't disagree there.
So why the preference for the KJV translation of the bible?

I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic schools all my life. One thing - at least the Catholic Church, at least in New Jersey. is more accepting of other's beliefs than the many other Christian religions I encountered in the Midwest. But in New Jersey - the Catholic schools teach sex ed, including the use of birth control, evolution, etc.

Catholicism has no backbone, if that's what you mean by tolerance.
And before you object... what do you say about an institution that can't even bring itself to put it's foot down on child molestors?

But I dont believe in god - so the mythical belief in religion makes as much sense as the Romans and Greeks with their gods. Religions change and evolve over time - just like everything else in this world. That's why their are even different sects of Judaism.

Sometimes I think Humanism is the worst of all.
But like tater said, the mystical cast that catholicism has taken on is one of it's most destructive traits. Christianity is inherently anti-mystical. Its message is brief and straightforward, and often painfully blunt. So humans add and remove things to try and make it more attractive, not realizing that this cripples the believers.

Religion in itself is a whole lot of bull... Whether Christian, Islamic or Buddhist... I wouldn't go shouting out that Christianity is the most "rational" in all it's mythology etc...

Buddhism is hardly a religion, and I'd rather be a humanist than a fundie. Oh wait, I AM a humanist.

Ideology- a set of beliefs, values, and opinions that shapes the way an individual or a group such as a social class thinks, acts, and understands the world
Religion- set of strongly-held beliefs, values, and attitudes that somebody lives by Encarta® World English Dictionary [North American Edition] © & (P) 2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Those are pretty similar, aren't they? So, if you're atheist, you have a religion/ideolgy that shapes the way you think and act. |
