Happy Thanksgiving Gimli, Gollum and all other Canadians. Today it's Columbus Day.
We'll eat our Thanksgiving on the REAL day - 3rd Thursday in November.

Happy Turkey Day!
Hey Canada, do you celebrate it the same way America does, with a turkey and cranberry sauce and stuffing and green bean cassaroles and mashed potatos and gravy...? Ah, now I'm hungry. I don't even care about the fat American stereotype around Thanksgiving time. I've gotta go practice eating.

Happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Canuckians. May our next federal elections be at least as funny as the U.S. Presidential Race.

Some helpful info from The Great White North-
Q: Why do Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October, rather than November? A: So we can give thanks for living in such a wonderful country and still get to Florida before it starts to snow.

When the settlers of the Mayflower first landed on Plymouth on December 16, 1620 - they faced a brutal winter. 46 of the original settlers died. However, by the spring they had signed a peace treaty between themselves and the Wampanaog indians, crops were planted and they were building their settlement. In the fall - the harvest they decided to celebrate and invited the natives. Chief Massasoit and 90 Wampanoag indians came to eat with them. Based on historical records the following was eaten during the first thanksgiving... Seethed (boiled) lobster Roasted goose and boiled turkey Fricassee of coney Pudding of Indian cornmeal with dried whortleberries Seethed cod Roasted duck and stewed pumpkin Roasted venison with mustard sauce Savory pudding of hominy Fruit and Hollan cheese The Indians brought 5 deer. (No Cranberry sauce - that was "invented" in NJ in the 1800's). They ate at large tables outdoors and competed in games testing skill and strength, keeping the celebration going for 3 days. In 1777 the Continental Congress proclaimed the "first official national Thanksgiving" through all the colonies, but was still not made a yearly event. It had been celebrated off and on prior to this by the various colonies. In 1863 Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as the official holiday for Thanksgiving. Franklin Roosevelt then changed it to the 3rd Thursday in November - there was a huge outcry and it was moved back in 1941 to the last Thursday. It's been celebrated as the last Thursday in November ever since (which above I incorrectly said was the third). I've always have had plans to celebrated Thanksgiving in October with Trish and her family on Six Nation Indian Reserve - but I haven't gotten up there yet. Historical information taken from preface of - The Thanksgiving Table: Recipes and Ideas to Create Your Own Holiday Tradition Hope this helps you Artanis. I shoudl have known that Thanksgiving had to be the last Thursday - my mother died Novemeber 20th - one week before Thanksgiving.

Myabe we can share some of our recipes or things we do for Thanksgiving.
When I was younger we used to always go over my maternal grandmother's house. My cousins and and aunt would be there. Later - we had it usually at our house - especially after my grandmother died and we had moved to Indiana. Several times - we came back to NJ to celebrate it with my paternal grandmother though. When my mother died - we were scheduled to go out to NJ to celebrate Thanksgiving - instead we ended up coming out for a funeral and a "celebration". It was the hardest Thanksgiving ever. This is usually what I have for Thanksgiving... Turkey with my mother's homemade stuffing Homemade mashed potatoes Homemade gravy Brocholli Oregonato My mother used to like sweet potato and we used to have cranberry sauce - I like neither one of them. I have made Thanksgiving lunch for various companies. Cooking a 25 pound turkey is a pain - but at least I always get it to come out juicy. Never had any complaints.
