Concerning The Breaking of the Fellowship
Near the end of FOTR, if the orcs had orders not to hurt the Halflings, why did Boromir have to save Merry and Pippin from an orc that was trying to kill them???(the orc had a sword raised and was ready to strike.)

Wern't there orcs from Mordor and Isengard there? Maybe it was an Orc not from saruman than didn't know the orders.. That's just a guess.

the orc was probably just trying to scare them
and if Boromir weren't there they probably would have just taken them and ran so.... and Minyacamiel I don't understand the meaning of your quistion (not trying to sound ofensive)

my queastion........
I just recently re-watched Lotr;fotr, and Saruman (spelling?) only told Lurtz to bring back the halflings unspoiled. But, then when Lutrz and the other orcs show up at Amon Hennet (i think that's the location) he says "Find the Halflings." But, the orc did try and kill Merry and Pippin. I'm soo confuzed!

Boromir didn't know that the orcs were trying to take the half-lings alive.

I thought that the orc would be trying to scare Merry and Pippin, so they it would be easier to kidnap them. I don't think the orc would try to kill them, since Saruman said not to. I thought there were only orcs from Isengard at Amon Hen, but I could be wrong.
Minyacamiel: do you mean when the elves depart from Middle Earth to the Undying Lands? Maybe you should read the book to find out what happens.

The orc was probably thinking: "Nasty halfings, making me run all the time. I'll show them!" that or he still had goo in his ears.

Boromir didn't know the Orcs orders. Anyway, I don't think he would have said, "Oh well, they won't kill you Merry and Pip. {To the Orcs} Here they are! You can have them!" Anyway, the reason Sauraman wanted the Halflings alive was probably to question or torture them. If the Orcs chopped of an arm, they would still be "useful to Sauraman.

Here's where reading the books come in handy.
Orcs from the Red Eye and the White Hand were present. Both had orders not to harm the halflings. As for Boromir, he had already broken his vow to protect Frodo and support the effort and so to regain his honor as well as to protect himself (the orcs and his people were hardly friends) he fought to protect M.& P.

I had noticed that part... why would even that one orc have it's weapon out to attack them? I just blow it off as one of the minor inconsistincies that almost inevitably accompanies a book-to-movie transition.

Folks, in the film, all the orcs at Amon Hen were Uruk-Hai, "Orcs of the White Hand."
The orc coming down the hill to attack Merry and Pippin has an axe raised for a death blow, and only Boromir's sword prevents the creature from chopping a little hobbit to bits. As to why, I would imagine 1) it got caught up in the moment and forgot his orders; 2) Lurtz had not passed the order to the other orcs that Saruman wanted the Halflings "alive and unspoiled"; or 3) the basic nature of the nasty, treacherous orc shone through. I am curious as to whether the Orcs of the Red Eye make their appearance in Rohan. To me, one of the best scenes in the books is the argument between the Red Eyes and White Hands. I hope this has been preserved in the film, but I ain't holding my breath.

A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless."
