I know this thread has been done, and I thought it would be fun to try it again, for a while! (For some reason, I couldn't get back to the original topic, so we'll just start a new one.)
I love reading about Theoden at the end of "The Ride of the Rohirrim": Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Eomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first eored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Theoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. I also love the passage when Sam wakes up at the Field of Cormallen: "Well, Master Samwise, how do you feel?" (Gandalf) At last he gasped: "Gandalf! I thought you were dead!...What's happened to the world?" "A great shadow has departed," said Gandalf, and then he laughed, and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count. It fell upon his ears like the echo of all the joys he had ever known. But he himself burst into tears. Then, as a sweet rain will pass down a wind of spring and the sun will shine out the clearer, his tears ceased, and his laughter welled up , and laughing he sprang from his bed. |

Re: Favorite quotes
i like loads of quotes, but heres a few:
The road must be trod, but it will be very hard. And neither strength nor wisdom will carry us far upon it. This quest may be attempted by the weak as well as the strong. Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world : small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve This is the hour of the Shire-folk, when they arise from their quiet fields to shake the towers and the counsels of the Great "He who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom." |

Re: LOL
And suddenly he felt the Eye. There was an eye in the Dark Tower that did not sleep. He knew that it had become aware of his gaze. A fierce eager will was there. It leaped towards him; almost like a finger he felt it, searching for him. Very soon it would nail him down, know just exactly where he was. Amon Lhaw it touched. It glanced upon Tol Brandir--he threw himself from the seat, crouching, covering his head with his grey hood.
He heard himself crying out: Never, never! Or was it: Verily I come, I come to you? --J.R.R. Tolkien |

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no
basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. |
