Percy Jackson & The Olympians by Rick Riordan
My 11-year old just borrowed & read The Lightning Thief - and now I'm reading it. Lots of fun - and pretty hilarious.
I wish I had thought of this concept. Anybody else read them? The movie comes out in a couple weeks. Sean Bean has a role.

I want to see the movie. It looks like a neat story (and not exactly a HP rip-off, unless you cound there being a boy/hero as rip-off...in which case...).
If the movie is good, I might pick up the book for a nice read . And plus, the movie has the full trailer for The Last Airbender, which looks to be really good.

The movie was pretty good, at least I thought so. (And hot men in skirts and armour can't go wrong too much. )
I may not have seen it if I hadn't seen the name mentioned here on the Entmoot, so thanks for that. I think I may hunt out the book. The plot promises to be interesting, if the movie is anything to go by.

I need to check it out. My mythology teacher was telling us that it apparently doesn't fit the 'hero' arch-type because the main character (according to him) never actually suffers at any point in the story.

True, going by the movie, the events are more setbacks than actual suffering for the hero. But if the original book is for kids, I understand why they would lighten it up a bit. If you look at the Greek mythology, some heroes really had shitty lives.

So I've been told as well.
I've hunted down the book today in the book store. Not sure when I'll read it, maybe I'll save it for the holidays. It will be interesting, usually I see movies after I've read the book (as long as I know there's even a book, mind.) I didn't know it was one book out of a series, though.

Yes - my son has read all five, and I've just started the last this morning.

Are they all on the same level? Or does the quality differs from book to book?

I'm on book 2 now. I really enjoyed book 1. I had no intention of seeing the movie, and I just bought the book to read on the plane (light reading is best on the plane, I find), but now I might just see the movie.

I was hooked by the title of the opening chapter - something like: "How I Accidentally Vaporized My Pre-Algebra Teacher"

Yeah, I read that on the back of the cover. When you read a sentence like "I was just an ordinary kid until I accidentally vaporised my teacher", you know you have a winner.

Haven't read any of the books, but I saw the movie twice and I thought it was pretty awesome and hilarious.

Just go the first book for my birthday and I'm going to read it soon, I shall see if the movie was true to the books.

The book's inderdeed quite a different beast from the movie. Usually I read a book before seeing the movie, it has been interesting to turn the experience around. There was enough different that the book still held some surprises after having seen the movie. Most curious I found is how they handled the characters, nearly everybody's motivation in the movie is totally different from the book-characters. Luke's a far more sympathetic character in the book.
The book was great fun. I think I'm going to look for the second one of the series.

Ooh, so the quality's maintained throughout the series? Awesome, I'll be adding the following books on my Christmas wishlist then.

I agree with BoP. REALLY liked the series - and read it all through quickly.
