Could you expand a bit on each and everyone?
For what qualities you are considering them as faves? Mine are Finrod - for his integrity, and Luthien - for standing up by her man.

Ooh, fun, I'll bite.
1. Fëanor - there's no disputing this with me. The greatest of all the Eldar. Passionate, firey, talented, and brilliant, he's also impetuous and a fantastic flawed hero! 2. Finrod - How can you not love him? Loyal, wise, kind, gentle and in all ways good, he's bound to capture your heart. 3. Maedhros - he's so tormented between his good heart and his desire to fulfil the oath. Truly a tragic character, especially his end. 4. Nerdanel - I think she's an incredibly underappreciated character. Has to be one of the strongest women in Tolkien's legendarium to be able to put up with Fëanor's passion all those years. AND bear seven of his children, when only one killed MÃ*riel. 5. Gildor - Don't know why, really. I just like him.

DPR's top five Elves:
1. Fingon - The valiant, loyal friend risked all to save Maedhros and heal the breach within the Noldor. Led the cavalry to thwart the young dragon Glaurung. Was on the verge of kicking Balrog butt when he got attacked from behind. What's not to like? 2. Fingolfin - "But even as Fingolfin spoke, Fëanor strode into the chamber, and he was fully armed: his high helm upon his head, and at his side a mighty sword. 'So it is, even as I guessed,' he said. 'My half-brother would be before me with my father, in this as in all other matters.' Then turning upon Fingolfin he drew his sword, crying: 'Get thee gone, and take thy due place!' Fingolfin bowed before Finwë, and without word or glance to Fëanor he went from the chamber. But Fëanor followed him, and at the door of the king's house he stayed him; and the point of his bright sword he set against Fingolfin's breast 'See, half-brother!' he said. 'This is sharper than thy tongue. Try but once more to usurp my place and the love of my father, and maybe it will rid the Noldor of one who seeks to be the master of thralls.' These words were heard by many, for the house of Finwë was in the great square beneath the Mindon; but again Fingolfin made no answer, and passing through the throng in silence he went to seek Finarfin his brother." I just love that he didn't say a word. I find that way more badass than any reply he could have made. 3. Maedhros - Good guy. Good heart yet great in battle, even one-handed. Sad victim of his rash "oath which none shall break, and none should take." 4. Elrond - Nice balance of everything and ties together all three of the main published texts. 5. Beleg - Loyal friend. Another sad victim of circumstance. Edit: I just noticed we both have Maedhros as our #3 but the rest couldn't be more different. I like your Nerdanel and Finrod choices, too. I'd love to know more of Nerdanel. Last edited by The Dread Pirate Roberts : 03-26-2008 at 06:16 PM. Reason: additional info then changed my mind {ha!} |

I wish we did know more about Nerdanel, but as far as I know there's just what's in the Silmarillion, and a bit in The Shibboleth of Fëanor (and was there some in Laws and Customs? I can't remember). But I think she had to be a fascinating character. One reason I'm doing the Fëanor RP on the other board. Yeah, other than that, though, our choices are quite different. Seems you're rather fond of the House of Fingolfin.

What I'm waiting for is someone to list Thingol as a favorite because I can't imagine why anyone would.

Yeah, me neither...
There's a thread in the Silmarillion forum here I replied to a few hours ago where I claimed my favorite dwarf was "whatever one administered the fatal blow to Thingol" - I think that gives my opinion of the guy quite clearly. Of course, with my love of the Fëanorians, I suppose it makes sense. They weren't exactly buddies.

Greetings
I can't stand Thingol. I dislike him probably more than the Sons of Feanor. I love Maedhros though. He's one of my new favorites.

Gil-Galad? Why? The guy was a bit of a poser.

The guy has my respect
He befriended the Numenorians of Middle Earth, was one of the first to suspect Annatar to be Sauron and fought in the Last Alliance, sacrificing his life. Doesn't seem like posing to me..

Finrod did this before they were even Númenórean - how is that special? Quote:
Sorry, he just doesn't do anything that stands out for me as being special. *shrug*

Besides, I thought this post was about naming favorite elves, not about who you judge to be the most special one, or a competition

I'm not trying to persuade.
I just asked a question and gave my opinion. Who's competing? Not me.

Well, Gil-Galad did manage to hold things together and stay king for far longer than any of his predecessors, so he must have been doing something right.
But my favorite always has been, is and will be Glorfindel. No more badass than any other elf-lord maybe, but he strikes me as a sweetheart.

Unlike Fëanor and Curufin, you mean?

Very unlike. Though I will admit to a soft spot for Nerdanel, Maedhros and Maglor. Celeborn is on my favorites list too.

Maedhros. Bah! Gave up the kingship just because Fingon saved his life. Bah!
Maglor...well...he never actually did anything but sing sad songs about how much his life sucked. As for mom, well, what can I say, she's my mom! Celeborn - he's not even Ñoldor! Bah.

And you did what again...? Oh yeah! Tried to usurp Nargothrond from your host, tried to kidnap Luthien, and got repudiated by your son. Real good track record there, Curufin, you couldn't even succeed at being evil!

Well, I said some really nasty things to Eöl, and I did shoot Beren. And I certainly didn't help Nargothrond any. And then I did do pretty well in that whole Menegroth attack...
