I'm happy with them leaving The Hobbit well alone, really. They did pretty well (for Hollywood-esque people) with the LOTR and staying true (the loss of the Scouring hit me hard, though!)
For some reason I'm getting this bad vibe that the Hobbit would turn out to be like the Chronicles of Narnia are, or even worse! Harry Potter... *shudders*

No worries
First of all I trust Guillermo del Toro in providing two classics in the name of The Hobbit. Secondly, the ruling was that the estate of the Lord of the Rings (Tolkien's heirs & Co.) could not prevent the making of the movies, but could file for economic compensation: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7637693.stm "A judge in Los Angeles has stopped the estate of Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien from seeking punitive damages against film studio New Line Cinema." So; "Mexican director Guillermo del Toro will direct both that film and a follow-up that will draw from other works in the Tolkien canon." I really can't wait

Yep! He's quite the director. And with Peter Jackson involved in some way or another this looks promising

I can't recall where I read it Link, but I seem to remember that nearly all relevant actors, including Serkis, who starred in LOTR were interested in coming back for the two Hobbit movies. It's looking good

Neither can I! The scene where Bilbo goes around in the depths of the Misty Mountains and has to elude the Goblins (They're Orcs right?) is gonna be whopping!
So goes for Smaug (Evil!) in his Lonely Mountain. He will absolutely rock. The Hobbit has so much greater potential for being through-and-through excellent because the story is shorter (makes it so much more likely for the screenwriters to succeed) and there's so much to be added from the years between the Hobbit and LOTR (like Dol Guldor and the Necromancer) which gives the Director a lot of room for creativity and an equal amount of room for staying true to Tolkien's work (since he won't face the same burden of having to cut away scenes as PJ had to do in the triology).

The Bilbo character is probably going to be new tho. And that's fine since the LOTR guy (can't remember his name) will seem a bit old.. I'm okay with that tho. Bilbo has to be a new face with the Hobbit being the true beginning of Tolkien's world! (He is the coolest character ever)
