Quite obviously the egg.
Let's say we had the species that preceded the chicken - I'll call it the "proto-chicken". A proto-chicken that somehow mutated over the course of its life would not signify the creation of a new species (i.e. the "chicken"), since its further reproduction would only produce more proto-chickens. Therefore, speciation and the creation of the "chicken" could not have occurred if it had not first been born in a "chicken egg", laid by a proto-chicken species.

Thanks Nick, or "IronParrot" for replying to my thread.
I also think it is the egg. I mean, you can grow a chicken out of a hens egg, right? Wait. Bad example. How about, you can grow a chicken out of a ducks' egg, right?
