take my Civil Liberties Poll
For a school project, I had to pick a controversial issue. For some reason, I chose Civil Liberties During Wartime.
I created this poll and I need to get 150 responses. I'm really looking for people 18 and over to take it. I'd really appreciate it if you would help me out by taking it. Post your responses or PM them to me. I also have to do a 30 second commercial on civil liberties being limited during wartime. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to PM them to me Take your time with the 10 questions, but it is due very soon. Quote:

Hmm. Hobbit, could you explain a bit more about #4 and #9? Like, does #4 mean authorities would be able to listen to anyone's phonecalls or just the ones of people suspected of a crime? And could you elaborate what "extended wiretapping authority" in #9 means?

this is, in fact, the way i suspect every advanced government actually works... do you really think the CIA (or your own government's intelligence organization) follows wiretap-type laws? i highly doubt it... they wiretap whoever they want, and will continue to... the issue is how that information is allowed to be used

Well maybe the CIA can gather some useful intelligence by randomly listening to people's phonecalls. In that case, maybe the wiretap laws should be changed so they don't have to break them?
I'm more concerned about companies and firms. It could be devastating if, say American authorities read foreign companies' emails and listened to their phone conversations and used whatever information they could gather to benefit American corporations. In fact, I think it's been proved that this has actually occurred. So I think it's necessary to closely regulate who the authorities can wiretap and what can be done with the information. [edit] Here's something that's relating to this. I found it by looking up "Echelon" in Wikipedia - Quote:

I think it's a big "as long as". IMO they should have to justify themselves to a judge before doing it.

if we make government intelligence agencies seek permission in advance, it hinders their abilities somewhat and may even compromise the very information they are trying to obtain... plus, it leaves the essential decision on "what was obtained" up to them... we have essentially given them permission to tap a certain line of communication with no further oversight if we only ask for justification if they wish to use obtained information after the fact, the focus changes from how it was obtained to what was obtained, which is a much more important factor to regulate
