Gather Lightning With "whire-mesh" Dishes

My idea is to, first of all, have a huge "whire-mesh" dish connected to several smaller dishes by which the lightning could be channelled to fuel-cells. I admit that only a few ergs could "saved" with every lightning-strike, but if one could somehow "lure" the lightning from the clouds into the first dish, a continuous charging of the fuel-cells could be achieved.

So you don't think that harnessing ligthning will do away with oil- and coalburning powerplants, nuclear reactors etc.

i am sorry... but I think that idea might lead to an increased 'death by electricusion' rate...

But hey? It might be worth a shot!...

My idea is to build a HUGE dish away from the houses. I did not intend for every house to have a dish nearby.

Erm. How 'bout Australasia? It was only where LOTR was filmed, for Eru's sake.

Well, in my estimation it's only slightly more fanciful than, say, building a giant inverted plastic funnel and using the sun-heated air that rises into to to power a turbine.

I'm sorry. I should have specified what continent I meant. The continental US has plains in the middle of it and there is where I meant to place the dish or dishes.

I really thought that a serious discussion would come out of my idea, but I guess it's too far out.

well heres a serious discussion about it, you cant power stuff from lightning becuase it just sends a sudden surge of electricity, that would have to be harnessed somewhere, and this would be more hassle than benefit, this is also the reason why we have surge protectors, if you power something from lighting it wouldnt get a constant flow of say 120v or what have you, and it would probably destroy whatever it was powering, i know from experience, my friend's house got a surge once, and it blew the tube in their tv, and fried all of their modems.

I figured lightning was like a very quick wave surging back and forth so that if hit the channelling-post of the titanium-dish (it being the toughest material in the world and probably being able to take a lightning-strike) some of the energy would be retained and could be channelled to the nearby super-fuel-cells.
