Superhero Movies
Is it just me, or has there been a big boom in the Superhero movie genre lately?
Spider-man and SM 2 new Superman movie coming soon The Hulk Daredevil and Elektra Batman Begins Fantastic Four X-men and X2. The Incredibles Which is your favorite? Which actor embodies their superhero most? Spider-man and X-men are my favorites, but the Incredibles was also great and spoofy. As for actors, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine gets my vote. Anything to add to this list? |

I think it's just you
Yeah, I've noticed myself. I don't know if I should be relived or sad beacuse I haven't seen much of them, just Spider Man and the X-men movies. I liked them, they were cool. But I'm thinking, if it gets a tad boring with all these movies. Some of the are quite similar, so...

I've seen Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, The Incredibles, and The Fantastic Four. I liked the Spider-man movies the best.

I also haven't seen most of these!
I just thought of some more: Catwoman Super Ex-girlfriend, coming soon (sounds cheesy to me) The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl Sky High I also did a search for superhero movies that are now in production, this is what I got: 1. Untitled Batman Begins Sequel (2008) 2. Iron Man (2007) 3. Hellboy 2 (2007) 4. Spider-Man 3 (2007) 5. Shazam! (2006) 6. Luke Cage (2006) 7. The Flash (2006) 8. Flash Gordon (2006) 9. Iron Fist (2006) 10. Deathlok (2006) 11. Ghost Rider (2006) 12. Superman Returns (2006) 13. X-Men 3 (2006) This craze is definitely out of control. I guess because so many of these have been successful, the moviemakers and comic-book writers want to keep making them. Do you think it mirrors some sort of fundamental need in our culture for superheroes? For us to imagine ourselves with extraordinary powers? |

On a side note, don't you think superhero movies are like the modern version of fantasy?

I don't know. I suppose they are in some ways. But they only focus on the elements of fantasy that they can use in a sales pitch, and leave out the part about intricate themes and often coherence.
I'm not a comic book geek, but still, some of them stray so far from the already established storyline that IMO they should not even be made. They're just blockbuster after blockbuster and viewers are becoming increasingly incapable of identifying and appreciating the real effort and thought that's worked into other, good movies. But Batman Begins is the obvious exception. I just rented it, too. Tomorrow morning I'll watch it again. And really, the first X-Men movie was great minus the fact that they didn't have my favorite character in it (Beast). So was the Punisher, although apparently comic book geeks were divided on that point.

Batman Begins was probably my favourite of them, although the Hulk rocked...

I'm way behind in watching these. Finally saw Batman Begins last weekend, but still have to catch Fantastic Four - and missed a few others (even Spiderman 2, Daredevil & X2!).
However - my kids and I just watched another one not yet mentioned "Sky High"! Great stuff... hilarious! Highly recommended for all.

Batman Begins & the X-Men movies. I will always love the x-men movies for turning me on to the comics. *headbang

You're right about coherence, Bombadillo. A lot of the stuff that's being made now makes no sense whatsoever. Here's a discussion I came across on another discussion board (I'd been wondering about this for a while):
Why doesn't Superman always wear a lead suit? Nothing in superhero-dom completely makes sense! But they did manage to find some reasons. Basically, if it was indestructable enough to do any good, he wouldn't be able to see through it. And I did mention "Sky High", Val. But I have yet to see it. |

All of them were sub-par in my opinion except for Batman Begins and Sin City. At most all the others are just mildly entertaining. Nothing too big or groundbreaking or noteworthy of praise whether it be performance-wise or direction-wise.

I'm very glad I can enjoy more of these hero movies than you can! The more of these movies I can enjoy, the better, for the happier I am .

Know what? I was talking to someone about the Superman lead suit thing again and I really think it could work. There's lead in red glass and he'd be able to see through that with his normal (not X-ray) vision so it would protect him from Kryptonite but not hamper him. And the suit could be made of the flexible stuff they use for those radiation apron thingies (I saw the guy in Smallville use one of those to pick up a Kryptonite bomb), with a helmet made of lead and red glass. Hm... Alas, he'll never do it because it wouldn't look as heroic as the red and blue tights.
Edit: And because it would prevent the use of an ongoing plot device, of course! Edit again: And he wouldn't be able to use the X-ray vision at all while wearing it. Something's telling me I've put too much thought into this... Last edited by Elanor : 01-10-2006 at 07:39 PM. |

Sin City was pretty much lifted straight from the books, so yeah... it was pretty freakin' awesome. I'd be more interested in a sequel if it were to cover wholly new ground though.
Joss Whedon is a god, so I'm expectin' good things from Wonder Woman.

I know there is going to be a sequel to SIn City but I forget which stories they are going to do. I heard Johnny Depp was going to be in one.
