Question about ratings in Australia.

I was up on this website about Ned Kelly...it's a movie with Orlando Bloom that's comin' out this year sometime, and I noticed that it was rated M for Medium level Violence and adult scenes. I was wondering if people had come out with a new rating level here in the US or if Australia has different letters for the rating of R or something. So in other words does M=R in ratings?
Thanks you guys,
Cheers,
Sam

M = Mature Audiences. 15 years and over, or with adult supervision.

Now that's strange; in America, it's a rating for computer games, and means 17 and older, I believe.

How is it strange? I understand that NZ has a more lenient ratings system from the US as well; some stuff that R18 is only R16 over here. Guess it's just not as universal as you thought, huh?

Pfffft. I've lived in three different countries. No way do I think that the rating system here is universal.

I just thought it strange that the system used for computer games was used for movies there.

In Canada PG13 is 14A (you must be 14 or accompanied by an adult), and R is 18A (18 years old or with an adult). PG and G are the same as the US.

I'll just go through Australia's rating system because I think the other posts in this thread are from other countries.

G
PG
M- Mature audiences (basically anyone, tho' younger people usually need to be accompanied by an adult - my 8 year old sister got to see LotR with just me and my cousins, the eldest being 17)
M15+
R- 18 years or over

Our rating system goes like this:
G=General Audiences
PG=Parental Guidance advised
PG-13= you have to be 13 or older to see it in theater, or accompanied by an adult
R= You have to be 17 or older
I take it that M rating would equal the PG-13 rating here? Thanks for the help guys.
And that's an interesting rating system. Kind of confusing but hey you probably think that about OUR rating system.
Cheers,
Sam

No. M is stricter than PG-13. In NZ anyway.

Ours is:

G
PG
R13
M+
R16
R18

our rating in canada is more lenient then america because i always look at movie cases and see americas rating like R but it is taped over with a 14a rating.

Canada's 14A range is roughly equivalent to anywhere from a "high PG-13" to a "low R" in MPAA (American) terms. An 18A would be a "high R" in a sense, and there is actually another "R" level above that (designating that it is for 18+ only, regardless of supervision) which is very rarely seen anywhere.

Because it's a different ratings committee up here, there isn't any direct parity between the standards. Canadian ratings aren't any looser or tighter, just on a different scale.

in australia there just recommendations up to about MA where you have to be 15 or older and R 18 and over... M doesnt really mean much but with Ned Kelly Gregor Jordan pushed really hard for it to be rated M and he got it in Australia dont know bout anywhere else.
