An odd "what if" question about the election
If both Bush and Gore suddenly died right now, what would happen? Would it become Cheney vs Lieberman, or would Nader become president?
What if Bush, Cheney, Gore, and Lieberman all dropped dead right now? Then what would happen? |

It would indeed be Cheney vs Lieberman, most likely. Possibly, certain electors could choose someone else (like Nader). Different states have different laws regarding the choices of the electors. What if Bush, Cheney, Gore, and Lieberman all dropped dead right now? Then what would happen? Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the US House would become President. |

Re: An odd "what if" question about the election
Come on, what is the likelihood of this happening?
The person most likely to die is Cheney, who just suffered his fourth heart attack. What's interesting is that if Bush and Cheney win the electoral college, and Cheney dies after he's selected but before Inauguration, I believe the Senate gets to choose the Vice President - and it's divided 50-50, Al Gore would cast the tie-breaking vote for Lieberman, or maybe even himself. So we could have Bush-Lieberman, or Bush-Gore  Weird scenarios. You have to wonder, if the election is thrown to the House and Senate, would Gore vote for himself or against himself? Are people allowed to vote for themselves? |

of course, even the president gets to vote for himself in the booths on election day (altough i wonder, do they have a special place for him to go? i don't just expect him to walk to the nearest polling station and wait in line...)

Re: An odd "what if" question about the election
Interestingly enough, the Democrats will control the US Senate for 17 days.
They convene with a 50/50 split and Al Gore as the tie-breaker on Jan 3. Upon Inauguration Day (depending on the Washington State recount), the tie breaker would be Cheney, or if Senator Lieberman is VP, then his replacement will be a GOP appointee! The Senate will be Republican on Jan 20. In the interval, I'm not sure what effect this could have if Gore pushes the election to a constitutional crisis. Bush and Gore may have it within their power to each prevent the other from assuming office, until Jan 20. If there is no PREZ or VP, on Inauguration Day, then the Speaker of the House becomes President. Interestingly enough, the Speaker of the House need not be a Member of the House. In which case, do not be surprised if Dennis Hastert resigns and George W. Bush is suddenly elected Speaker of the House, and assumes the Presidency, nominating Dick Cheney for appointment to VP. Even in the next-to-the-worst-case scenario, Bush wins. (Worst case is a National Emergency suspension of Congress and the Constitution for six months...) |

hmmmm....
Of course you realize, you're just BEGGING the Secret Service to come frisk you!
(Actually, I WAS frisked by Secret Service once! I had to interview Walter Mondale.) But don't be so sure that we would be out of the Florida mess! In Missouri, the Senator Elect is the Widow Carnahan. Why not the Widow Gore? Gore's lawyers might postumously argue... KEEP COUNTING! |

Re: An odd "what if" question about the election
Cheney's wife, Lynne, has written several books and one has been republished.
Every time Lynne Cheney's morbid novel hits the bookstores, her husband has a heart attack  Quote:
