When Turin met Voronwe the latter made a statement to the affect that "the Hunger must be long and the Cold deep" for it to affect the Elves.

Sure it effected them. They could just endure more of it than Humans. Look at the crossing of the Helcaraxe. Probably no Human could have survived that.

Afro-elf, the second part of that line was something like "to affect the son of those who have endured the Grinding Ice". Funny, considering SGH's reply. He was referring specifically to the Exiled Noldor, though he was more boasting than anything else. Fact is Voronwe and Tuor were both put through a lot of physical harm during the cold journey to Gondolin.

I would like to bring up some facts:
Maedhros was captured in the valian year 1497 and in 1498 he was hung on the rock by Morgoth. 2 valian yaers later Fingolfin arrived in Middle-Earth (remeber that 1 valian year is about 10 years of the sun) and another 5 years of the sun later Fingon rescued Maedhros. I don't think any elve can outlive that with out feading. But who feaded him I can't imagin. Findegil |

That's an interesting question. If there were an icey wasteland between the U.S. and Europe, how long would it take to walk acrossed that? That is the distance I always thought of when they crossed the Grinding Ice.

i think that it was metioned that they saw the flames when feanor set their ships ablaze.
I know elves have far superior vision but DAMN. if it took them YEARS to across they must have Hubble vision I guess they must have used magic to keep food stuffs fresh (Hell for that matter how did WE do it crossing the bering strait?) How many years where the feanorians in ME before Fingolfin arrvived it seems like it would have been at LEAST 20 years uisng the above info. Quote:

I will have a look for the times you asked for, when I am back at home. But for the vision of Fingolfin seeing the burning of the ships, you had to consider that the earth was flat in that time. If you are at see shore and the see isn't moved too much, than your sight is ended by the bending of the earth. So if the earth / see is flat, you could see a light in a very great distance.

RE: maedhros and hurin
Where does it say that Elves HAVE to eat or drink? I don't think there's any evidence to prove that Elves must eat and drink other than for enjoyment.

RE: maedhros and hurin
I just figured it out from Findegil's post:
'I would like to bring up some facts: Maedhros was captured in the valian year 1497 and in 1498 he was hung on the rock by Morgoth. 2 valian yaers later Fingolfin arrived in Middle-Earth (remeber that 1 valian year is about 10 years of the sun) and another 5 years of the sun later Fingon rescued Maedhros.
