Job hunting woes

When it comes to finding something useful to do over the summer, it's unbelievable just how totally useless one year of Engineering studies can be.

That is all.

if you have engineering skills you might could get a job at a Boeing near you. don't know if there are any though. that'd be useful.

I understand. Very difficult for students to find a temp job in the limited time students have in summer. A lot of people don't understand that, though.

Don't even talk to me about the job market. My contract ended March 28th and I haven't been even getting any phone calls.

You know one of the worst things that potential employers do to job hunters they've interviewed? They never call them back to tell them if they didn't get the job. This happened to my dad when he was looking, my husband, and several friends. It is so unprofessional. Even if you make a follow up call, they won't just say, no, you didn't get the job. I have no idea why, but it is cruel, because you just think maybe they haven't made the decision yet. And sometimes that's true. So just be prepared for that when you're in the market, unless you're lucky enough to find something right away.

that's a bit harsh Over here yer nearly always get a letter (usually written ever so politely) when yer've failed an interview/job application. Can really put a cloud over yer day when yer find one of those in the letterbox first thing on a morning

Have you ever had an interview with 4 people, at the same time? I actually like that better than one on one. I don't know why? It seems more efficient, you know, kill 4 birds with one stone. I always do better in an interview like that.

My first really important interview was me being interviewed by about 10 people, I'm not kidding. I hated it, because the teachers there would rather have been doing something else, and having all those people asking questions felt so much more formal than a one on one interview. It felt more like an inquisition than a "chat." Plus, no one really knew what to ask, so there were moments of uncomfortable silence, then someone would ask something just to break the pause, and it was something dumb which made my response seem dumb. I didn't get that position, but ended up getting a different one that I didn't have to interview for, since I had already had the other interview, so that was a plus.

A little off topic, what did you change to?
I'm sure your story will really boost IP, gimli

My parents are forcing me to get a job this summer.
Ugh I like being unemployed. They want me to work
somewhere where they can get discounts. I wanna
work at the library. <laughing not tongueing(?)
I'm sure interviews will be bad. I hate talking to people.

What makes you say IP is ugly?

By the way, I'm really un-talkative in person, too.

Over here we are obliged by law to inform people that they have been unsuccessful in their applications - the moment we accept someone's CV (resumé) they basically have the same rights as our regular employees (by accepting the CV we are basically 'employing the person until such time that we inform them that their services will not be required). This sometimes makes my job dificult as I get saddled with all the unsolicited CV's - our managers feel sorry for the people who come into the branches with their CV's, so they end up sending them all to me & I have to bloody well sit here & look someone in the eye & tell them "Sorry, we have no vacancies at the moment & I am in no position to accept your CV at this stage" or "Due to the recent merger we are in no position to recruit employees from outside the company" it really sucks, I hate having to dash people's hopes like that 'specially in today's tough economic climate.

We also have panel interviews, which is sometimes a bit of a schlep since I have to get at least 4 people to join me in interviewing prospective staff & half the time the candidates don't show up or they arrive late - that really peeves me - if they were so serious about getting the job they'd make a plan to get here.

I also did Media related courses - mine were Media Management, Media Law, Visual Studies and Journalism, I find that a lot of what I learnt then is helping me now (with the training).

I was lucky when I got my job - was employed as a temp (worked school holidays for about 3 years) & then got a contract & within a year was made permanent & then in the next year I was moved to the position I'm in now.

IP, I hope you find a job you like (what type of Engineering is it?)

Oh, jobs, I do know....I'm out looking for a job right now, it's not fun! Haven't done much yet, as I'm at the filling out applications and looking for help wanted signs stage, but even that's hard 'cause I'm really shy in the non-computer world, so it's hard for me to go into a shop and ask if they're hiring and what-not. I'm awfully lazy, doesn't make it any easier! Heh.

Fortunately I don't need something in the field I'm studying, because I know there's nothing a student of philosophy and history can get in those fields at this point!

But then I might end up bagging groceries, and that'll drive me nuts but hey, it's money, ne?
