Commonwealth(?) Games
Commonwealth games have just started - when did Mozambique become part of the commonwealth ? also this word 'commonwealth' - bit of a misnomer really isnt it. Isnt it about time we british face upto the fact that the commonwealth was not about sharing but about empire building and subjugation - we should be lamenting the fact not celebrating it.

I suppose that's why it's called Commonwealth Games now - it used to be the Empire Games. Looks more like the pub league of international sport to me. And no rugby league - just rah rah sevens. Waste of time!
Grumble over!

i dunno it wasnt all bad on our behalf. sure we did rule over them for a time. But we brough stability to a lot of these areas and when it came time to hand them back we did.
I dont think the commonwealth (formally the british empire) really begrudge us. On another matter my friend from here in cockermouth is swimming for the ilse of man on the 3oth so if u cheer on emily nixon it will be cool she swims on the 30th

If countries don't want to be part of the Commonwealth, surely they can leave? We're not forcing them to be a part of it. Presumably they benefit in some ways too (although I can't think what that would be, apart from trade.)

Cassiopeia - do you think the reason we have the com games is so the english can win some medals ? Anyway Thorpey should be banned , hes got flippers instead of feet , no wonder he wins all the time !
sween / sunstar I agree that the games are now a trade thing and to a certain extent im sure a lot of countries are in it because it is actually to do with the commonwealth. I just think its a bit of a moral dilema for me, I abhor violence ( except when aragorn is kickin butt ) and hate the idea of bullying etc, and that im afraid is my idea of the british empire. ok some good things have come of it obviously ,as in our relationship with the likes of the aussies ( we like them so much we even ley them beat us at rugby- yes Draken i had to mention that, i hope you were suitably embarassed last week ! ) and the kiwis ( as above - do you see the pattern of our ggod will to our cousins !! ), but i do feel ashamed of the empire thing.Maybe if the name were changed to something like the american ' goodwill games ' I would be a bit happier. come on emily nixon - go girl ! Lets all support emily on the 30th - closest thing we will probably get to a mooter being famous !

i dont think its really a trade thing its really just sumthing to do. Its nice that u abore violence but im proud of the British empire i firmly believe that we did a good job. we set up a lot of things for these countries. places like australia like us more because we didnt really conqure them (allthought the natavives may disagree) we just populated them and in time them have become independant.
Places like india we had good trade with i dont think we ruled any of them with a iron fist. the british empire was in the latter part of last centry i think we were well behaved and quite welcomed. I see it as a much less violent roman take over. Probably didnt like it at first but after that we got a lot of benifits. and dont forget we handed them their teritorys back without a fuss.

It's eggs, man, eggs! Cook me some eggs, woman! And sardonic means to cynically mock. Learn something new everyday.
I hope NZ doesn't disgrace themselves this time!!

I have no earthly idea where Browney bay is. But then I'm a "JAFA" - Just Another F***ing Aucklander - we're ignorant of these things.
Oh I'm sure we'll win SOMETHING - I'm just annoyed that our govt doesn't put more money into atheletes. Every games we get arse whalloped by the Aussies cos they have tonnes of money pumped into their sports, and we continually suck. Ah well. I'll just have to abscond somewhere where they do better at sports.

I made my first comment in regard to how far the British influenced the world. I think that Canada and England are beating us but wait till the swimming! Regarding Ian Thorpe, did you know he does this show here called Undercover Angels? He is like Charlie (in Charlies angels) and these 3 girls go out and help people with thier problems.
I don't think we are that good at gymnastics, we are way behind China, USA and Russia. We have the Institute of sport in Canberra which most atheletes go and train, so we spend a fair bit of money on sport. That is why we are so good. I just found out that my cousin is in the Commonwealth games. She is in the shooting. Not that I really approve of shooting, but, oh well, I hope she does well,
