Real Land Surveying
Alright! This is going to be the thread for all things Surveying.
I have little time now, but when I come back, I'll explain lots of stuff. I'll also keep up a "Surveying Journal" here, in the tradition of George Washington and Abe Lincoln. But meanwhile, you guys can ask..."Why what when where how?" Here are Some Sites

as a non-surveyor who has no interest in the topic, i politely turn my head slightly to look at other threads...

Well heck, not much time to fill in on too many things even now...but
Update: Me and my dad just officially finished a 2045 acre job...actually was quite a pleasant job, farmland. Record sighting for snakes on one job. Traverse close was decent, and the highway section wasn't TOO busy, and it was surprisingly straight......Of course not many people besides myself and GM know what I'm talking about...that's why the NEXT time I come over, I'll explain everything.

Where are you working? I was always in the West (Canada and a little bit in the States- No Dakota/Montana) where they have the actual grid system laid out- makes life a lot easier.
What instrument are you using? I stopped running a transit just as the new electronic models came out- used Kerns and Zeiss, but my baby is the old optical Wild T16 |

Never heard of them! I presume you guys used the biggies. I really have to respect you there, those things were heavy. We use these guys Officially I'm the rod guy. I know minimal stuff about the actual mathematics involved, except the basic Asimuth circle and such. The land we survey is crazy (Tennessee, btw). Just imagine, there's the occasional field, but mostly its woods and hills, and the worst combinations thereof. Just yesterday, in the boiling heat we had a job with a hill that was 52% grade slope! That, and there were briars and vines we had to hack through for sustained periods of time (). I've been surprised how many times surveying can actually be a very dangerous job! One time we set a delta (a traverse nail) on a cliff with the raging creek nearly two hundred feet below!
