Orcs
Just wondering. Can orcs have their own minds or are they complete Sauron powered..... Eh... Dummies ?

In the return of the king (At least in the books) Sam overhears a few orcs wishing for the old days when they could just go about as bandits...
So it is clear the while the orcs arn't mind controled they are still enslaved by fear of Souron.

In Myths Transformed Tolkien speculated that Orcs merely relayed old records of speech set in them by Melkor and that they had no fea - although in the letters Tolkien gives them more credit.
