I do not believe it was named after Gimli the dwarf.
I read this biography on "Sveinn Valgardson" and I quote a section: In 1903 he set up a flour and feed business in Gimli, the capital of New Iceland. http://www.finearts.uvic.ca/~wvalgard/biography.shtml So it seems that the town Gimli (now, I'm not sure what New Iceland is, but I'm assuming it's mentioning the same Gimli since many of the places mentioned are near the Gimli you talk about) has been around before 1903, certainly before the LOTR character was invented. -`*smintz ps- sry to burst ur bubble |

What Bubble? I don't got to show you no stinkin bubble
No burstification atal! I didn't actually think the town was named "after" Gimli the Dwarf, nor even for Gimli the Dwarf, I just thought it was amusing. Is there a "Frodo Township" somewhere? or a "Lower Gandalf"? Knowwuddamean?

"Gimli, in Norse mythology, is paradise."
It says that on the page. If there was a town like, Hobbiton or something, I would so live there...even if i didnt like it i would have a weekend/summer home...just to say i did. actually, this is giving me bad ideas. the sign that says the name of my town is walking distance from my house...hm...no! resist! must restrain myself! The town of Gimli is in the province of Manitoba in Canada. Manitoba or perhaps its just parts of it, is sometimes called "New Iceland".

I dunno bout Tolkien names, but, we have Potter st. (which is a really dingy street lol)... we have lots of weird streets around here. Like, in this small area as we were driving, I noticed there was "Suntan St." "Shady St." "Shade St." "Sunray St." (go firgure, it's Florida) all like a few yards from eachother LOL! Tourists musta named it... Tourists from like the north pole. so sensitive to sunlight lol

We have a Potter's Mill. Also while I was in Springfield, MO, I saw a shopping center that had the world Elf in it somehow, can't remeber the exact name though.

next to my house is a driveway with a sign that says brady lane. in the patch of forest (called by my brother and me the fourth forest [from my house]) there is a little river stream thingy. i am convinced that it is the brandywine reincarnated.

Well, there's a place that I drive past nearly every day - a sculptor's workshop named - wait for it - Helms Deep!!! Every time I go past I look at it, and yes it is named after the place. It's even got a LOTR poster in there. One day I'm going to walk in, go up to the nearest worker I can find and say "Who named this place? They ROCK!" and walk out again.
Lanelf.
