and it didn't even matter if it was just FotR or all of LotR...
How did Gandalf describe Frodo to Butterbur when told who to look out for/give the letter etc.?

A spark in his eye, I believe, and a cleft in his chin- as well as stout and rosy-cheeked. He also mentioned he'd be going by the name of Underhill.

"A stout little fellow with red cheeks. But this one is taller than some and fairer than most, and he has a cleft in his chin: perky chap with a bright eye."
..that is *the description* given to B.

You're all right, but I'd say it goes to Rosie. The first one with the amount of detail I wanted.

what alerted Sam and Frodo to Tom Bombadil's presence in the Old Forest?

I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing. Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling, Sweet are the voices in the lost Isle calling, In Eresëa, in Elvenhome that no man can discover, Where the leaves fall not: land of my people forever!” |

Didn't they see him first? Oh, maybe it's that confounded movie getting in my head again. But I thought maybe they saw him a while before meeting Old Man Willow, and then he sang as he came to the rescue..... ARGH.
p.s. Sorry for not posting. Again.
