I thought it was cool that something like three women ruled over Numenor...
On a side note, I find it interesting that little is mentioned of dwarf-women... "It was said by Gimli that there are few dwarf-women, probably no more than a third of the whole people. They seldom walk abroad except at great need. They are in voice and appearance, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart. This has given rise to the foolish opinion among men that there are no dwarf-women, and that the Dwarves 'grow out of stone'. "It is because of the fewness of women among them that the kind of the Dwarves increases slowly, and is in peril when they have no secure dwellings. For Dwarves take only one wife or husband each in their lives, and are jealous, as in all matters of their rights. The number of dwarf-men that marry is actually less that one-third. Tor not all the women take husbands: some desire none; some desire one that they cannot get, and so will have no other. As for the men, very many also do not desire marriage, being engrossed in their crafts." -Return of the King, Appendix A, p. 449 Cool to hear about something unheard of in the regular text, but I'm rather glad it doesn't mention orc-women, assuming they exist (and you women thought you had it bad! Well, a few of you ![]()

![]() I've notice Tolkein didn't include many girl characters. (Exceptions: Arwen, Galadrial, and Eowyn) But the ones he did include were rather powerful. (like Arwen, Galadrial, and Eowyn)

I noticed that, too. The female characters that are there leave a very strong impression.

Whoa - did you two realise you have the same avatar?
But yes, they do tend to leave impressions. I've calculated the female parts of LOTR: 7. Galadriel, Arwen, Shelob, Eowyn, Goldberry, Rose Cotton and Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. Well, most leave impressions. Some *coughGoldberrycough* are just annoying. ![]() Lanelf.

There is a thread in the Middle-earth forum discussing the most impressive female characters of Tolkien.

Lanelf, I hereby excommunicate you from the Church of Tolkien. En nomine Iluvatar, et Manwe, et Varda, amen.

The Mad Merger Strikes Again!
I felt the "girls in LotR" was essentially the same topic as this one, so...
BTW, Goldberry is a great character! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() I don't think she was great. But she wasn't annoying. Goldberry was there. Did she even say anything?
But other than her I think all of Tolkien's characters, females too, were included for a reason.

Indeed she did. About you, she said "He is", which I feel is the best definition or description.

Yeah, she was a great lady. She loved doing the wash on rainy days.

I forgive you (not that it's in my power to). But I disagree. Goldberry is not annoying. How could you say that?

![]() ![]() How much longer should you be unforgiven? ![]() But, the Church is lenient and graceful. Return to the flock, with our blessing. And now, a hymn, to celebrate Lanelf's return to the Church of Tolkien. First two verses: Snow-white! Snow-white! O Lady clear! O Queen beyond the Western Seas! O Light to us that wander here Amid the world of woven trees! Gilthoniel! O Elbereth! Clear are thy eyes and bright thy breath! Snow-white! Snow-white! We sing to thee In a far land beyond the Sea.

*Joins in*
O stars that in the Sunless Year With shining hand by her were sown, In windy fields now bright and clear We see your silver blossom blown! O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! We still remember, we who dwell In this far land beneath the trees, Thy starlight on the Western Seas. |
