He IS an Englishman . . .
Oh, he could have been a Prussian, a French or Turk or Roosian,
or perhaps Eye-talian . .
but in spite of all temptations
to belong to other nations,
He remains an Englishman . . .
He remaaaa-ins an Englishman!

Very good reply, Gerbil. I take it all back.
As an American of English descent, I applaud your sentiments, I'm a patriotic American about the same as you are a patriotic Englishman.
And only an American could play Frodo - hah!

PAH! why wasn't i here before to defend australia! it sucks being an australian-candian because i'm always defending two countries that constantly cop **** especially from americans hee hee

but seriously australia has a handful of cities and a lotta space in between. most of the icky things are in those spaces. except there are a lot of spiders (eep). and it's not THAT HOT (but warm enough to go the beach in early autumn! yay!) and considering most of our cities (ie. all but our capital) are COASTAL they're certainly not dry. but yeah australia is a lovely country yadda yadda yadda anyway come move here frodofriend so i'm not the only one to get payed out for liking tolkien

and gerbil should visit australia too. snakes like gerbils *evil grin*

Err, weeel, I, err, take some of my comments back...
Hmm, looking back maybe I was a bit rash in some of my statements. I am intelligent and dignified enough to admit when I've been wrong in judging someone's character.
So, my apologies, Gerbil, we're the same breed you and I. Patriotic to the bone yet eyes wide open...
So, again, I have been rash. My apologies Gerbil.

Cheers! Let's all get on with the more pressing issue of enjoying life

Actually, I've just found out something horrible about LotR - Tolkien DOES admit that the LotR has an underlying Catholic theme.

Bugger

Of course - elsewhere he strongly denies this. I wish the old git would make up his mind! AARRGHH

Professor Tolkien was a devout Roman Catgolic so I wouldn't be surprised if he slipped in Catholicism somewhere...

Ah yes, but theres a difference between being influenced by your own religion when you write, and writing something deliberately religious!

In Tolkien's case I'd have to say it's the former, Gerbil.

But I was talking to someone about FotR the other day and he said he would have loved the film more except EW bothers him 'because he looks really weird'.

Thinking about it, I can kind of see what he means (not as weird as Pippin, but he's peripheral). Same sort of thing as, say, Julia Roberts. You either find her large mouth really attractive or you think you'd rather snog a hippopotamus

Come on then, defend the ugly old git!

I have a new sport - it's called EW-fan-baiting...

I don't think EW is weird or ugly. I thoght so at the begining of the movie but I changed my mind. And I think I have invented a new sport. It's called, say that again and I swear you will regret it.

What are you doing bringing this thread back on topic?

So who wrote the second quoted statement - I don't recall seeing it anywhere...

Ah well, let's just see what happens

ELIJAH WOOD IS A WEIRDO - HE LOOKS WEIRD, ACTS WEIRD AND EVEN SMELLS WEIRD.

Oh yeah, and his eyes are faked in photos and films too you know.

So now exactly what am I going to be regreting again?

:okes Gerbil with a slightly pointy stick::

you know, once I gave a hamster a bath. She had been sitting on my head and fell into my bowl of ice cream...

Oh yeah, on topic.

I am personally a fan of Elijah Wood, and I also enjoy dregding up old threads.

How can there be plural unique people?
Being unique is by definition one of a kind

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Gerbil Actually, I've just found out something horrible about LotR - Tolkien DOES admit that the LotR has an underlying Catholic theme.

Apropos of that comment, I quote Pablo Iglesias, a reviewer of Joseph Pearce's Tolkien: Man and Myth:
""The Lord of hte Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work' (Tolkien, in a letter to Robert Murray)
These words might not be to the liking of many Tolkien critics, analysts or pseudo-writers that have been trying to unravel the Tolkien Myth. I believe that many of them have been at least partially unsuccessful due to the simple fact that they underestimated or totally overlooked the main essence of Tolkien's life which was his spiritual faith as a Catholic."

Tolkien's religious faith is what gives LOTR its beauty, hope, and everything that stirs the heart and makes us love the LOTR. To think otherwise is to have a false impression of Christianity. . .
