Actually the mark on Bilbo's door (place by Gandalf) said "Burglar wants a good job, plent of Excitement and reasonable Reward.
And when Gandalf explained to Thorin that he'd prefer a Hero but they were very busy and so he settled on burglary, Thorin said; "very well then, supposing the burglar expert gives us some ideas or suggestions".

Boy this is hard. Thrain 1 had the Arkenstone. Thrain II had the key for the side-door, while Thorins father had an oak shield and a large club.
