Hello there,

Not keeping this avatar for long. Just a little experiment.

So whats Entmoot's stance on Tobacco advertising? Its been banned nearly everywhere... is it here?

Im not a smoker by the way.. just curious

I htink tobacco advertsing was similar to hard liquor advertsing in America - it wasn't really banned so much as there has been an agreement that it wouldn't be advertised. They started to do hard liquor ads again - but then they seemed to disappear and I haven't really seen them on tv lately. Never see cigarette ads on tv - buit you do in magazines and billboards and things.

Well yeah - isn't that the whole thing about advertising - to get you to do or buy something?

Why do you think they used things like Joe Camel and the tag line "you've come a long way" with a picture of a beautiful successful woman smoking? They wanted to make it cool to smoke and everyone basically wants to be considered cool and with the "in" crowd. Even if they say they don't. Beer commercials do the very same thing, as do all products.

hmm, doesn't quite work with 'Hamlet' cigars then, I dont think i would want to be like 'The Baldy Man', even if he was played by the same man that played Rab C Nesbitt, although I wouldn't aspire to be like Rab either

Interesting Twista. I came in here to tell you that your avatar was eeevil, but since it's an experiment I guess that's different.

I'm glad tobacco advertising is banned. I don't think the ad alone will make someone start smoking, but it is one more in a myriad of subtle factors urging people to smoke. Plus, I don't want to see some random jerk with a camel in a bar cluttering up my dad's Road & Track. I agree with JD, and I think tobacco companies try to get people, especially young people, to start smoking, more than other companies do this with their own products. I'm going to stop my smoking rant here, but suffice to say that I hate smoking with the fire of a thousand suns.
