As you can see there will always be differing views on how a character should be drawn/costumed/ etc.

me9996 (or should I be saying, "you9996"? )
I merged your new thread with an older one on the same topic. Hope you don't mind - and that you even enjoy reading through what others had to say on it. We often close redundant threads, but the old one hadn't been posted to in 8 months when you started this, so no problem.

Nahhh, I like the long beard, I mean he's sooo ancient it really could be that long, quite easyily in fact.....besides he could use it as a towel or blanket or something in a pinch.

I do not think that there was anything out of place with Gandalf's beard. At times I thought that Saruman's beard had too much volume for his face. (I am not sure if that would be the right wording, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say.)

The Hobbit (animated movie)
(must admit I have never seen the Rankin-Bass LOTR)
However, I occasionally watch the Hobbit, primarily because it is the only movie that I know of representing the Hobbit. I agree that John Huston was an inspired choice to voice Gandalf and I also liked Orson Bean's portrayal of Bilbo. Yes, yes, the animation is horrible. However, until public pressure encourages (forces?) Peter Jackson to take on the Hobbit, it's the one way I can enjoy the Hobbit on screen. |

Anyway, I didn't _hate_ the animated Hobbit. I _really_ enjoyed the music, gandalf's voice, gollum's voice, and smaug's voice.
I especially liked Gandalf's intro. "Long ago, when this ancient world wasn't quite so ancient..." I was _not_ crazy about the elf-things that were in mirkwood...Not to mention the goblins were just ludicrously short-legged. Kinda like the Tasmanian Devil. |

The goblins reminded me of Jabba the Hutt.
I watched the Hobbit last year and had mixed feelings about it. The characters looked awful and they surely didn't put a lot of effort into the animations. Fili and Kili were cute though with their blond little beards. I enjoyed the singing, even though it sounded really bad at times. It helped bring the movie closer to the book imo. I liked how the elves look. Not at all like in the artworks by John Howe, Alan Lee and the other famous concept artists. When I first read The Hobbit (which was my first book by Tolkien) I envisioned the elves looking like that basically. It wasn't until I later read the Silmarillion that I understood that the elves were in fact beautiful beings. Anyway, the movie brought out the same feelings I felt when I read the book for the first time years ago.

"Bilbo. Bilbo Bagins, bravest li'l Hobbit of 'em all!"
"The Hobbit" animated movie, simply put, rocked. I can't say as much for RoTK, it was still 'Good,' I guess, but it didn't have that special 'Hobbit Magic.' The animated "Lord of the Rings," though, was by far the worst! It could have been good, but that mixin' of animation and live action just yucked it up, and seriously, they should've stuck with Rankin/Bass throughout the series.

If they filmed it in a similar manner to the Hobbit, than I think they could have done a better job than Bakshi in making LOTR.

Tolkien animated movies
I still have to say I enjoyed the Hobbit. . . . I enjoyed Gandalf and Smaug and (Mostly) Frodo and Bard and Thorin. The sylvan elves were pretty ugly. I have it on tape and I still watch it occasionally. (I think I'll watch it tonight! )
If they'd spent a little more time on the goblins and the elves, dropped the Glen Yarborough songs and put the Beorn section in (shades of Tom Bombadil!?!), it would have been very good. Didn't enjoy the Bakshi LOTR (this from someone who has seen "Wizards" about ten times). Saw it in the theatre, rented it about ten years back in an attempt to change my mind about it . . . and didn't. By the way, there is supposedly a Bakshi ROTK, released overseas only. I've seen copies for sale on eBay. As I didn't enjoy the first one, I doubt I'd enjoy the second one.

the cartoon film actually does a lot to stay on track. Most of the voices are OK, but the Hobbit look is just not that great.
