One-third of Canadians condemn homosexuality, abortion: poll
Last Updated Sun, 11 Jun 2006 22:34:14 EDT
CBC News
More than one-third of Canadians who took part in a recent national poll condemn homosexuality and abortion.

About 37 per cent of men consider homosexuality immoral, and 26 per cent of women, found the Léger Marketing poll, which was released Sunday and contacted 1,508 adults between April 17 and April 23.

"This is one issue where still we haven't resolved our views collectively regarding homosexuality. We probably tolerate it much better now than we used to, but still I don't think we've resolved this issue in the country," Léger Marketing's Christian Bourque told Canadian Press.

It's been 39 years since former prime minister Pierre Trudeau decriminalized homosexual acts, giving his famous quote: "There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation."

About 30 per cent of those polled consider abortion to be immoral, 17 per cent are against divorce and eight per cent are against contraception.

The poll found that 34 per cent of respondents disapproved of abortion. Men had a 35 per cent disapproval rate and women were lower at 33 per cent.

More than 80 per cent of Canadians, not surprisingly, believe that pedophilia is immoral.

Nearly 75 per cent look down on extramarital affairs and 68 per cent are against prostitution.

The poll shows a wide discrepancy in opinions between the sexes and in different regions of the country.

The poll asked respondents what behaviours they consider immoral. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Men are more critical of pedophilia, abortion, homosexuality and divorce than are women. But women are tougher on adultery, prostitution, alcohol abuse, pornographic films and blasphemy.

The genders are less divided on the morality of sex before the age of 16. About 61 per cent of men and 68 per cent of women believe that juvenile sex is wrong.

But they are equally tolerant of contraception.

"We found that men are much more tolerant than women on most of these issues, except for abortion," Bourque said.

Women "see clearer rules about things and a more defined way of behaving in society."

The poll also showed that Atlantic Canadians were most conservative on sexual practices, while respondents in Quebec and Alberta were the most tolerant.

Albertans were the most tolerant of prostitution, alcohol abuse, porn movies and contraception. Quebecers were the most tolerant of adultery, sex before 16, blasphemy, abortion and homosexuality

I wonder what the other two-thirds of Canadians think about homosexuality - immoral is only one choice in a broad spectrum. I suspect most people (of the remaining two-thirds) are either ambivilent or not keen on it, but don't feel it's immoral, with a significant chunk being for it. (If you can be "for" or "ambivilent" about someone's sexuality anyway.)

That's an awesome quote.

That doesn't seem like a significant difference between the genders to me, but it depends on how many people were polled and the confidence interval (which, I'm happy to note, is listed later. )

Their results suggested homosexuality was the biggest difference. There was only a two percent difference on abortion.

This is an interesting obsevation on Albertans. Every Member of Parliment they elected in our last national electoin was Conservative, who are generally conservative about abortion and gay marriage. (However, the Conservatives do have other policies, obviously.) I'm not quite sure what this article means by "sexual practices" - maybe this doesn't include sexuality anyway.
