Yes, that was Auguste Rodin, you of course got it, Gaffer! But you haven't given us a new one yet, so in the meantime I'll give you guys another one...
Mostly this artist is well known for all his ink drawings and etchings, but this here is a gorgeous little sculpture of his.

Hector, you really shouldn't post links wherein the name of the artist (and probably the name of the work itself) is visible.

That's a groovy sculpture, Lotesse. Sadly I have no idea at all.
Sorry I wasn't around to post another pic; real life intruding etc. |

That sculpture is by M. C. Escher!
Yes, my RL is busy a lot lately, too, Gaffer. Well, I'll wait.

Hm, the Escher sculpture doesn't show up anymore. Do you have a link to it?
I remember going to a Rodin exhibit when I was about 14 and being totally blown away. Amazing stuff. His sculptures were so lifelike that he was actually accused of casting real human body parts. So he ended up making them all either very small or huge. |

OK, apologies in advance for this one being a monster, but I had to work hard to find one without his name in the URL.

Ooo, thank you, Gaffer! Nice one. Is that by Georges Braque?

No, but close. He probably met this artist and was certainly influenced by him.

Correct! (you're back, and right in there with the correct answer. have a nice trip?)
I love Cezanne. I had an almost spiritual experience the first time I took off my glasses (I am blind as a bat and have two coke bottle bottoms for lenses): it was like the picture became a window. Or maybe it was the mushrooms... |

LOL! I know what you mean about the glasses, I'm blind as a bat as well. Years ago I found myself in Giverny and took my glasses off, stunned, I gasped when Monet's garden blurred into one of his paintings. Btw, I loathe the Impressionists, but adore gardens so agreed to tour Giverny.
Trip was lovely, San Fran and Monterey Peninsula, ate a horrifying amount of seafood, saw grey whales spouting and elephant seals breeding. here's something a little more recent than the Father of Modern Art (aka Cezanne) : |

Arg! Can't remember the artist, but I did see the Simpsons episode the other night where Homer is sitting at the counter in this scene.
Why do you hate the Impressionists? The first time I saw paintings which truly interested me it was Impressionist stuff (gotta love those haystacks, surely!). I think it gave me a gentle introduction to understanding what Cubism, Expressionism etc were about, and also made me appreciate better what came before. But, no, I don't have Monet coasters and tea towels. Sounds like a fantastic trip. |

Oh, MAN, that artist is on the tip of my tongue - is it Hopper, something Hopper?

yep, Lotesse, it is by Edward Hopper.... a painting called Nighthawks which has entered into mainstream consciousness, ergo Gaffer's view of it on the Simpsons
here's more info http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections...em?acc=1942.51 as for Gaffer's question re: why I hate the Impressionists, it's because they are too sweet for my taste, although I do understand their importance in art history canon also, I should mention that the entire Impressionist movement has been hijacked and perverted by a number of contemporary painters that have so polluted the original movement that I can't look at a Renoir without gagging.... |

Funny, HE, I visited Chicago for the first time this summer, and got lost in the Impressionist Gallery. Impressive to see them in person for the first time, but I guess I can understand getting sick of them.
PS I have never come across a more grumpy group of people than the employees at the Chicago Art Institute. But other than them, I loved Chicago. This small-town girl had never been through a revolving door before visiting there. :-)

Heh! I guess I like 'em because they opened my eyes to how there's always colour. Which "contemporary hijackers" do you mean?
You're up, Lotesse, if I'm not mistaken. |
