I watched Birth of a Nation the other night -- an incredibly slanted and disturbing movie, which was the first ever feature-length film. It was made in 1916, I think, so it was really amazing to see. It was quite elaborate for it's time.
It makes the KKK out to be the heroes of the story (the film is partly based on a play called "The Clansman"). It is amazing to see how film was used as propaganda so early on, and one can see how effective it can be (the sympathetic main character and the story and characters surrounding him, etc., then justify the actions that although we know they are immoral, seem perfectly natural, as if they are the only way to escape an unlivable situation). DW Griffith puts in there that it is intended to be an historical account, but although the "rebirth" of the Klan in the early 20th century I think had a different aim than that of the original purpose (mainly, as I understand it, underground opposition to "Northern rule," a morbid attempt to regain control over their situation, as opposed to later when it was purely in the business of ridding the communities of blacks), the film presents the Klan as a kind of "knight in shining armor" organization! It is obvious that Griffith was a racist, and that he saw the Klan as being justified in it's actions.
It is especially interesting to watch now, in modern times when so much has changed here in terms of racial equality. I wonder if they thought about people so far in the future watching it, and if they had even an inkling that the whole project would be viewed as so primitive, both in terms of the filmmaking and in terms of the viewpoint it asserts.

Swimming Pool by writer/director Francois Ozon. Got mixed reviews, but overall, I liked it. Not perfect, by any means. Still, it was more about mood and suggestion than any sort of linear narrative. All that plus it was relatively slow moving, -- all positive qualities for me.

I watched The Mummy Returns. It was good, but not as good as other movies I've seen. The plot didn't make sense to me and there was lots of cheesy violence, but all in all, it was a good movie.

I finally got to see Princess Mononoke the other night. I thought it was excellent (despite being a bit graphic for my tastes). But I didn't understand this: San was Princess Mononoke, right? So why was she called San?
Now I'll have to see Spirited Away, I guess.

finally 28 days later came to australia and i saw it friday night... it was so incredibly great. one good was the blood factor, very nice color and decent amounts. it had one of the coolest actors around playing Frank but ive forgotten his name, he played Hamish in Braveheart and Monk in GoNY. i cant tell whether he is Scottish, Irish or English
Pirates of the Carribean comes out on thursday so ill head off and see what i think of that, looks awesome

no. I saw FGF, though. I actually liked it, even though it was completely repulsive.

I just saw Bringing Down the House. Sort of a coming of age minstral show meets Porkies. The horror... the horror. (Must read reviews before renting) I found myself checking email and actually reading the spam during the last hour of it as a form of relief.

So, I'm renting 8 1/2 as an attempt to clense my movie palette.

Also saw Soldier of Orange which was spoiled by a defective DVD disc, so I'm not sure the experience allowed an objective assessment.

Crimson River is up next for a bit of the old ultraviolence. ]:-}

I saw Chicago last week. Why must they keep singing all the time.

Amelie... worthy of a re-rental.

I will chewck out War party on your recommendation, LT.

Dragonheart was very enjoyable despite not being great cinema.

What did you think of Bulletproof Monk, LT?
