My roommate is taking Italien. Intensive Italien (why do I spell it like I'm in Deustchland? Ich verstehe nichts...and I suck at German )
And she's Chinese and only speaks English and Chinese....so it's quite stretch for her. But I think she'll be able to do it. |

It's more like French. But if you know some French and Spanish, you can practically understand it. Most of my extremely limited knowledge of Italian comes from Sarah Brightman songs.

My favourite of her songs:
Strade son' cambiate. Faccie son' diverse. Era la mia citt*. Non la conosco più. La ora io sono solo un' estranea Senza patria. I remember you were there. Any one emotion. Any true devotion. Anytime, anywhere. Case son' cambiate. Voci son' diverse. Era la mia citt*. Non la conosco più. La ora io sono solo un' estranea Senza patria. I remember you were there. Any one emotion. Any true devotion. Anytime, anywhere. Tanti, anni son' passati. Vite son' cambiate. Era la mia citt*. Non la conosco più. E ora io sono solo un' estranea Senza patria. The Italian translates to: Roads have changed. Faces are different. It was my city. I don't know it anymore. Now I am only a stranger without a native land...... Houses are changed. Voices are different. It was my city. I don't know it anymore. Now I am only a stranger without a native land. Many years have passed. Lives have changed. It was my city... well, you get the rest. I think I'll go post this in the lyrics thread too.

「行かなくてもいいと言った」は 何ですか?
(anata no haha wa yasashii desu yo! [kanji for iku - to go, kanakutemoiito - kanji I don't know - tta ] wa nan desu ka?) Does the 行 involve a tense I'm not familiar with yet? [/QUOTE] If I'm remembering correctly (which I think I am, but who knows?), "ikanakute mo ii" means "(you) don't have to go". It's similar to saying "oteari ni itte mo ii [desu ka]?" (can I go to the bathroom? or literally "is going to the restroom ok?") "-to itta" is the same as "-to iimashita" and that means I'm quoting her. "iimasu" or "iu" means "to say". (A little different than hanashimasu/hanasu 話す which means more like to have an actual conversation.) Also, you can say "to omou" which means "I think..." So, gakkou he ikanakute mo ii to itta" 「学校へ行かなくてもいいと言った」 means "She said I didn't have to go to school." Also, when you're referring to your own parents, it's haha or chichi 母 父 but when you talk about someone else's parents, you say okaasan or otousan お母さん お父さん because it's more polite. I think you also call your parents otousan and okaasan when you're speaking to them. |

Hey, does someone have a link to a Japanese language pack? (It can't involve any Word cds because I'm too lazy to dig them out. )
Récentement, j'ai fait une gaffe de penser que Portugais est très similaire a l'Espanol. (Je crois qu'il y a beaucoup de fautes dans ce phrase, mais... quoi? ) Un gars qui a juste démarrer (is that "moved in") dans ce corridore m'avait expliquer que ces deux langues sont très différant. For those non-Frenchies out there, I said that Portugese and Spanish are actually quite different languages. Finnish is another one that is often mistakenly thought of as similar to other Scandinavian languages. Norwegian, Swedish and Danish all have a fair amount in common, but Finnish is totally different. Thank you in... Swedish = tack Norwegian = takk Danish = tak Finnish = kiitos Yeah. Finnish is very hard. I'm very proud of the few Finnish words I know, and my painfully built up ability to pronounce them. Besides kiitos, I also know kippis (cheers) and karjalanpiiraka (delicious food). Where's the Finnish Mooters when you need 'em... Nerdanel is Finnish n'est-ce pas?

finnish is more related to the magyar branch of indo-european lanhuahes, such as is hungarian, rather then the other main european branches
celtic - gaelic, breton, cornish, welsh, manx helleno-latin - french, italian, spanish, portuguese, latin, ancient greek germano-scandinavian - english, german, swedish, norwegian, danish, dutch slavic - serbian, croat, bosnian, modern greek, russian plus some like romansch and basque that dont really fit into any branches |
