Well, we don't really have any special rules for that kind of thing. One just has learn how pronounce the words I guess.

As I posted, in this thread, some time ago, a entire list of Swedish words which have the same letters but different pronounciation.

I think sometimes you can guess that a vowel is short if it's followed by more than one consonant and is stressed.

Oh and JD if you want to listen to the language more I recommend this site. Just click on 'Lyssna' (or the ear) in the top right corner and then 'LÃ¤s Text'.
