Have an excellent trip!
For once I think today I would like some tea. Earl Grey, I think. |

Great choice! I have to catch up on my tea drinking so I've got one box of Twinings and Bigelow each.
I found this cool downloadable program about a year ago. It's like a video game, sorta. It's called active worlds (the antecedant of Worlds.com). I am particularly spending a lot of time on the Mars world. ![]()

Looks pretty sweet...
And why the fascination with Mars in particular? |

I'm a space nerd! Oh, and because they say that the "world" is acurate compared to a mercator projection of Mars. 12 S is 12 S, etc.
Besides, why not? I'm never really going to go there anyway!

Hey, that's cool! But I meant in generally, not just in this game thing. I never really thought of Mars as being particularly interesting of a planet.

Well, it has a real interesting history for one! But I guess it all roots from it being very close and bright this month and the book I jsut bought about it.
It really isn't that interesting, not as much as other stuff. It is, to me, more interesting than Jupiter because I've already seen Jupiter. Saturn is almost directly behind the sun right now, so that won't interest me until maybe winter break. Venus rises too late. Mercury is too close to the sun to observe with my telescope. Uranus and Neptune don't particularly interest me. Pluto can hardly be seen with the Hubble, so I'm not exactly real hopeful on seeing even the slightest spec with mine.

I guess I never really thought about from that standpoint, as I am only now learning my way around the night sky and I don't have a telescope. Personally, my favourite celestial happening is a supernova. The planets in our solar system are ok. Venus must be said to kick some ass at least. The gas giants are the prettiest though. I think that besides the planets though, there are some pretty cool moons out there.

Oh, they are! I know about them, but unfortuneately I need a much bigger telescope with a wide apeture to see them.

Troll's Bane, I've got a quick question - if I look up at the night sky right now, without a telescope, and tried to find the astronomical location of Mars, in what direction should I look? And I'm asking you, too, because we're both in L.A. so you can direct my eye best. For instance, should I look toward Orange county, should I look toward the Valley where you live, etcetera. I'm located in Manhattan Beach right now, and as soon as you give me some layman's-terms coordinates, I'm gonna try and find Mars in the night sky.

Well, give me a second. I might not be able to help, because I think Mars has already set, but I'll see. I need to see where Manhattan Beach is and judge from there.

If you have pretty much all night, you will get to see it. I was wrong: it hasn't even risen yet. It will probably be at a good distance above the ground around 2:30-3:00 AM, East North East of anywhere in our area.

Does it rise in the east coast or west first? Because according to fourmilab I think it's right close to the horizon where I am, but I don't know which way it's heading.... I think it's behind the trees, if I've estimated distances right.

![]() ![]() You are right, though. It won't be at a favourable point ot observe it until at least midnight, assuming you have no large trees or hills east of you.

I live in Michigan remember? It's 12:30 here.
![]() Now where does the sun rise first.... *easily confused* ![]() I wish my mom would let me go onto the roof. Because there are a lot of big trees to the east. |
