I was thinking:

Ole Bull

Rikard Nordraak

Niels Gade

Edvard Grieg...

and for some bad and lame reason, I cannot think of the other composer...he wrote four symphonies.

Added:

Mahler: Sym.No.9/Das Lied von der Erde/Haitink (my only squabble is that the movements are all broken up. I hate that!)

Bruckner: Syms. 4 & 9/Sergiu Celibidache (according to Gramaphone, a very unothrodox interpreter of Bruckner and music in general)

Tavener: The Portecting Veil/YoyoMa
I HAD to have another version. I loaned my Rodezhenesky/Isserlis to someone, and they have not returned it to me. I love this piece, and I like John Tavener in general. I can identify with his Russian Orthodox faith, since I am Orthodox myself. (However, he is NOT russian, he's british).

I now have Ruckus (like Napster), and am going to sign up for Naxos online at $20/year. Outstanding resource.

Right now I'm going through Napster's entire collection of Shostakovich's symphonies. Next are his String Quartets. Then I ought to move on to Beethoven.

I'm hooked on Leonard Bernstien's opening to On The Town, "New York, New York."

How about this question: how does everyone feel about the musical affairs in their church? (if have one)

ANSWER: I think that lately they've become too centered around Pastor Graham's son. Not a bad kid (and not a bad singer), but perhaps a little to... boring. Especially for people like my mom and stepdad. Not classical enough for me.

Right, it's too "pop music culture"-ish...I've seen that in a lot of churches.

Yeah. It used to be a rock and roll church, which, as you probably don't know, I liked before classical music. (In fact, I was the lead squeaker in a zero-hit wonder band once.)

Aha...former Mick Jagger, were ya?

Have you guys heard that "Cartoons praise the Lord" song? That is an abomination! ...and to make kids go to the front of the church and sing a long is no better than a circus in church!

OK, I've just realized I can actually submit something here that I think Hector will appreciate.

My first classical record was:
Toccata and Fugue for organ in D minor, BWV 565. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach ...

Still one of the best.
..."ahh, Bach"

The character said that line in courting a woman who loved Bach and the classics. As he was unfamiliar with the music, Hawkeye suggested he respond; "ah Bach", whenever the woman brought up a question on the composer.

Yep. European sources say it went well and he has actually said he wants to do a bit more singing before retiring to the kitchen (his other love).

I had the pleasure of seeing him at a book signing years ago and then at The Met after that. Overwhelmed by his talent.
