Any of them will work. I know I gave one of my friends Night Watch (which comes at what is so far the end of the Watch series) and she still devoured it and went on to more. I personally started with the Colour of Magic, and it is a fairly good start, but Mort (the first Death one, I believe) is a very good spot to start, and for a long while my favorite (since surpassed by Night Watch).

Yeah, Mort is one of my favorites as well. Sadly, I parted with my copy by giving it as a birthdaypresssent to a friend hoping that it would inspire him to read more. Didn't work very well...
Myself, I started with Hogswatch when I was 13-14, but didn't get much of it to start with. (The advanced English didn't help wither, though I hardly think you'll have any problems with that. ) Then I read Pyramids (in Norwegian, actually), got hooked and ploughed through Hogswatch like Death's scythe through corn; for then to proceed with the rest. Currently reading The Science of Discworld, by the way. Nice read so far, lots of interesting facts (about real-world science that is).

I've only read Equal Rites, and it is awesome!
Are any of the books connected? I mean about the same characters?

and the the two first books are connected - 'Colour of magic' and another one. Death is in all of them, of course... he's the best! |

There are the Watch-books (which Katt has posted already), the books about the Lancre witches (Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade and Carpe Jugulum and perhaps The Wee Free Men), the books about the fastest wizard of them all (The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Eric, Interesting Times and The Last Continent), and the books about Death and his family (Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, Hogfather and Thief of Time). That's the connections where I can think of. Most other books are with new, original characters as far as I know.

Most interestingly, there are Wee Free Men (which Eärniel just mentioned) and A Hat Full of Sky, a pair of witchbooks written for children, and the Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents, the Pied Piper of Hamelin set in Discworld (with Pratchettstyle twists).
Oh, and Going Postal is WICKED cool.

Last Saturday I met a vampire named Count Floyd who quoted the Good Omen's passage about any tape left in a car for over a fortnight will automatically turn into a Best of Queen album.
There are so many wonderful people in the world, and so little time.

Of course he had good taste in music!
It's just the curse of his car that you can't leave a tape in it! Speaking of that theroy: - [p. 19/3] "[...] all tapes left in a car for more than about a fortnight metamorphose into 'Best of Queen' albums." In an interview in Comics Buyer's Guide with Terry and Neil, shortly after the American release of Good Omens, Terry proposed the theory that, when you're driving through the country late at night, and there's nothing on the radio, you find yourself stopping in at an all-night gas station and looking through the tape rack; the only thing there remotely tolerable is a Best of Queen, so you buy that. Two weeks later you can't remember how the thing got there, so you get rid of it, only to go through the same process again. Neil's theory was that tapes really do turn into Best of Queen albums. from The Annotated Pratchett I love that site.

So it can go drinking in the US! Cool.
It's amazing that he's putting out 2 books a year now on a series that's 21 years old...

Speaking as a person who has found that Going Postal ruined the formula (it had Chapters!!!!!!!!!!! Argh!!!!!!!!!!), this thread might have some use in pursuading Terry Pratchett to... get rid of the chapters? That's the only problem with his books that I can think of.
If any of you have ever read the Tom Sharpe books (which are extremely rude and not half as funny), you may realise that a few of Terry's characters are based on the Tom Sharpe characters (like Ridcully, Dean, Bursar, Vimes...) My favourite novel is................................................ ............................. .................................................. .................................................. .... .................................................. .................................................. ... .................................................. .................................................. ... .................................................. .................................................. ... .................................................. .................................................. ... .................................................. .................................................. ... .................................................. .................................................. ... .................................................. .................................................. ... ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Might I inquire what is wrong with chapters as chapters? Obviously if misused... but I didn't find that in Going Postal.

Yeah, two books a year during 21 years is mightily impressive. Although I heard he's going to take things easier a bit since he just had some heart trouble and needed an operation.
Chapters? Ye gods, whatever next? *still waiting until Going Postal gets published in paperback*

I'm still waiting for "Going Postal" to hit the library system.
He uses NUMBERED chapters? AAAAAAAAAAAAAWW. That ruins it... I like how there never were chapters before, just sections.

In the middle of Going Postal at the moment and enjoying it so much...well, sort of in the middle, more like past the middle and swimming fast toward the end.
I find the chapters are quite fine. I mean, it's certainly different than other books, but what does that matter, seeing as he uses them well and it fits quite well within the overall sense of the book. I think it was a decent choice for this one. But so good! It was the first book I picked up after a whole semester of only reading what was assigned to me (there was quite a bit of that). And I think Monstrous Regiment is my favorite, or at least high up there, certainly. |
