He was in the movie! In FotR, you can see Bilbo bid Fatty welcome at the party. But it was sad that we never got to see more of him

Pippin is the best hobbit. I liked how he was innocent in the book and curious about things. By the end he was more wise about the world he lived in.
In the movie he just sucked though.

Pippin is excellent in the book, but in the movie he, well, does suck. But Sam is the best hobbit. He has always been my favourite character, even years ago when I first read the books and weren't as obsessed as I am now.

I don't mean to be a stickler about this, I just want to gently remind everyone that it is unnecessary and actually undesirable that you mention whether or not you liked or disliked the character how he was portrayed in the movies, since this is the books forum. It is assumed that when you discuss the characters here, you are referring to the books only. There are threads in the movies forum to discuss the characters in the movies. Thank you.

I liked Samwise. He is by far the best Hobbit! I used to like Frodo..but Samwise is best! I loved his loyalty and courage, and he was really cool when he rescued Frodo from Mordor.
After that it would be Bilbo. He is a great character, but mostly in The Hobbit. He was really funny, and I loved his personality. Bilbo reminds me of me. I don't like Pippin or Merry. They annoy me, especially when Pippin threw that stone down the hole in Moria. I mean, how stupid can you get? I love it when Gandalf teases him; it's so funny. I did start to think they were OK in The Return of the King, though, when they became soldiers of Rohan and Gondor. Fatty Bolger is a really cool guy. He was pretty brave volunteering to stay behind to tell Gandalf where the others had gone, even when he knew the Ringwraiths were out. I wish he was in the book more. And for Frodo, well, he's a pretty good guy. I hate it at the end though when he gets all weak, though. It's kind of sad, really. Good thing his loyal Sam is there to help him.

I agree with you Durin's Bane. Sam is my favorite hobbit (and character!) too. He was loyal, and brave, and he wasn't afraid to speak his mind (like in Ithilen. It may have gotten him in a little bit of trouble sometimes, tho...). Merry and Pippin matured a lot by the end of the RotK.

Bilbo has got to be by favourite. He becomes quite endearing in The Hobbit and when we see him in LoTR, there are references to his learned qualities - his songs being a prime example (especially his translations of the elvish language). Of all the hobbits Bilbo is, perhaps, the only one who can be said to be in any way erudite (increased during his sojourn in Rivendell).
A distant second would be Merry. I always remember the animated version of the LoTR film when Frodo finds out that the other hobbits have been secretly spying on him. The speech that Merry gives to justify the conspiracy has always remains in my mind (the passage in the book being no exception)
