Wenn ich ehrlich bin? 'When I'm honest'? I didn't know that it was said like that. Ich habe etwas neu gelernt!

I just want to make a card for a friend saying 'Don't stress! It's ok!' auf Deutsch. Maybe that'll finally push her into learning it.

That sounds like something you would say to me.

Hmmm, I think we would say.

Nur kein Stress.

I love the way scandinavian countries have so many apparently redundant ways of classifying frozen water!
I'd love to live where you get 'soft hail' or 'corn snow'.

Yes, I am saying it to you too. But it's for a friend in real life who really stresses herself out too much. How is the /u/ in 'Nur' pronounced, because I'm pronouncing it the Swedish (!) way. Other than that it's 'kine shtress', nicht wahr?

Hi Lin! Horrible avvy you have! (just joking.. )

I think the u in nur is pronounced like the Swedish o.

Sveriges fana e mycket vacker, men. Och Sverige är det bästa landet, bortsett från kanske Australien.

I know what you mean, but you do realise there are several Swedish [o]s?

I think it is closer to our å-sound. Like n - åå - r.

Hehehe.

Jup, great. Sounds right to me.

About the /u/ in "nur". It's similar to the /u/ in "sure".

Here I post an attempted translation of "The Ballad of St George"
which is played evereday at noon, from the clocktower of the townhall in the centre of Stockholm.

The Ballad of Saint George
(translation from
the Swedish Sankt Örjans Visa)

1. The Virgin:
Hear here St George, I say to you,
you shall on my quest ride .
To Babylon, that lovely town,
and slay the dragon in a stride.

2. Everybody:
That dragon has a strange custom,
each day he wants to be fed,
both folk and beast he must now feast
until he this town has made dead.

3. Everybody:
The King the people gave this advice
that each day a man or woman sacrifice.
In hope that this act should suffice,
that we may longer be spared and keep well.

4.Everybody:
When everybody had their duty done,
the King’s daughter must be the one.
The citizens to the King then went
so that He his daughter would send.

5. Everybody:
My King I hold you to your word
make us not into liers,
or we will begin to thy castle do,
a thing which we really don’t want to.

6. Only the Women:
The Virgin in her finest dress,
the finest dress she possesses,
and then she takes her very own lamb
and then she leaves the castle.

7. Only the Men:
The Knight St George now came riding,
before his horse all were fleeing.
His banner was white and the cross was red
which he had in his hands.

8. St George:
Why stand you here, my fair maiden,
why lookst thee so saddened.
What is it now that bothers thee?
I see but that which is clear, see.

9. The Virgin:
Ride now away, thy insolent knight,
do not cause any more blight.
‘Cause it is enough that I now shall die
and do so alone and not with thy.
10. Everybody:
And then came the Dragon of this lake.
And St George towards him ride.
No bird fly as fast as his sword smote.

11. St George:
My dear maiden, I step forward.
I bind the dragon with your girdle,
that your Mother and Father might see
that I was the one who saved thee.

12. Everybody:
They led the dragon to the town,
with St George and the lovely maiden.
and all the people in the town
begun to that place to run.

13. Everybody:
Hear, my king, I say to you,
this is not a time for rapture.
With all thy realm and all thy folk
I shall thy now baptise.

Is dat zo? Ik zag foto's van kikkers en ik dacht aan jou. Hoe gaat het met je?

Yes, I cheated again. But hey, I learnt quite a bit about Dutch this morning so there.
