Good for you two. Judo is "the gentle way" but you do get very sore learning how to fall correctly. Once you do, it's great. Similar to real life situations where someone usually winds up grabbing you and one or both wind up on the floor. Keep trying.

Tae Kwon Do is great while your young or Korean
It's 75% kicks and unless you really, really keep at it you find with age that the kicks just aren't as good or as high as they should be. It also precludes fighting in close and so I tend to not recommend it for true self defense. Yes, it can be utilized but with the aforementioned caveats.

I do Judo!

I am now a green belt!

When I 1st started, I always did a left breakfall instead of a right!!
I landed on top of every one, it was embarasing!!
I still can't do rolling breakfalls right! Sometimes I just do forward ones when no ones looking!

Congrats on your promotion. Do try to keep it up as long as you can. Even if you don't continue to Black Belt you'll find many uses for the art as you travel lifes highways.
Then when and if you get your Black Belt, you'll discover you don't know anything after all.

A little bit of my old self is back and I might even get paid to take kendo.

Basically, I get to take it with the kids at school as part of my work.

Is the Judo grading system at your school different then the average belt line? The order of belts at my school (A Dillman school, if that means anythign to you) is: white, yellow, orange, green, green with blue stripe, blue, blue with black stripe, brown, brown with black stripe, red, black, and then the degrees of black. I'm a 2nd Kyu, or brown black stripe. I think my dad is a second degree black belt, or 2nd dan. I'm not sure if "dan" is right though.

At this point I really don't know. I just found out yesterday I could do it and it all been done through translation. It won't start until one month from now so I will have some more info then.

I don't know about Kendo ranking systems.

BTW I am 6'2" and all the students in the class will be about 11 and 12 year old Japanese kids. That should make things interesting.

THE BELT SYSTEM differs with each school or teacher in some cases. Dillman is very respected in the martial arts world and I know of his work personally. Second degree black belt is second dan...the Japanese word for First dan isShodan, then Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan etc., etc.

Kendo

Ranking in "kyu" is 9-1 then the dan ranks begin. Usually a teacher will be Sandan or above minimum. No rank is shown normally.

Be prepared to get your ass kicked.

I'm not sure what dan my main teacher is, though I'm sure he's above a Sandan. My dad and I are actually pretty good friends with him. I basically grew up with my martial arts teacher, since my dad has been attending his classes since I was around four/five, and I've been attending them regularly (up until recently) since I was eight.

He has trained with Dillman, Oyata and lots of other people I can't remember.

Man, I miss going to class.

Ok, I am in Shorin-Ryu Karate, which is Okinawan. I'm about to test for my Blue Belt, and I'm kinda nervous, so, wish me luck!
Anyone else do Shorin-Ryu?

I hate the cocky kids that take martial arts. The ones that think they are real good and show it. I have a friend who is a green belt Taeokwondo and another kid from some form of Karate walks up to him one day and says "I'm a black belt so I can easily kick your ass." Anyway to make a long story short in about half a minute the black belt is lying on the floor seeing stars while my friend just walks away, "Jerk . . ."
