In my little town here in Taiwan we've been celebrating a 3 day festival in honour of Ma-tzu, Goddess of the Sea. She's the protector of fisherman and sailors, so is the most important deity in this island nation. This particular festival is restricted to my hometown, and only comes around once every 12 years.
The main feature is that the whole place goes vegetarian for the three days. All restaurants and markets stop selling meat, eggs and, especially, fish and seafood, to honour her finny subjects. The school cafeteria too, much to my son's disgust- "Whatever happened to separation of Church and State?" he demanded to know- been listening to me too much. Even McDonald's goes along- our local franchise only opened in 1996, and kept merrily selling burgers during the last festival in 1998 until being visited by a group of large burly men covered in tattoos, who "suggested" they show some respect to the Goddess (Taoist temples in Taiwan are often associated with gangsters). Of course, there's always those darned immmigrants who refuse to adapt to the customs of their new country, like my friends- Tennessee Pete's Diner, Dave Marino's Italian restaurant and Khabir's Shawarma Stand all did a roaring business- a lot of people still want meat. My wife's family, although Catholic, has a long tradition of being sailors (my family, too) so they keep the festival to honour the intent, much the way I do Christmas. And on the last day, the beach is packed with people fishing- this evening there's a huge fish and seafood barbecue, also in honour of Mat-zu, who is, after all, the goddess of fishermen.

GrayMouser, I'm so glad you shared that. It fits into the story I'm working on for NaNoWriMo perfectly. There are people who still cling to old polytheistic customs, and lots of sailors and fisherman (including one of the main characters). I will have to use some of that, since I was thinking there should be a festival or something soon...

Thank you guys for the replies... one of the things I like about the Moot is getting perspectives from people and countries from all over.

OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS!!!!!! CHRISTMAS IS SO FREAKING ONNNNNNNN!!!!!!
Let me explain: My family is full of ba-humbugs who wouldn't know the Christmas Spirit if it bit them on the Nativity Set Ass (the donkey in the manger ). Last year I had to twist my sister's arm into helping me set up lights outside (which she TOTALLY loved doing once she started). BUT THIS YEAR IT'S SO ON!!!!! We are going to decorate the entire outside of the house AND THE INSIDE!!!!!!! AND we're putting the tree in the front window instead of at the back of the house, because we're going to let our Christmas Joy be seen by the entire world if it's the last thing I see happen in this family. My mom totally got on my side this year. My dad and sister still don't care, but at least I have an ally this Christmas. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! Combined Family Caroling. My family and the family of my best friend (the 33 year-old mom... everyone in both of our families is as least slightly musical, so it'll be perfect). As I told my family, whether they like it or not this is going to be the best family Christmas our family has ever experienced!!!!! Unlike last year I'm not expecting anyone to get into the spirit with me, or help out with the decorating, so I wont get upset like last year. |

I've just found this awesome, mellow bar, where they apparently play lives jazz and blues every day, starting at NOON. I'm pretty sure it's my favourite place in Toronto now. >.>

Christmas spirit... yeah, started listening to songs already, but I doubt I can get anything in this house Christmassified or my relatives in the Christmasspirit. Since it's my grandmother's birthday on the 24th and since my grandmother is a stressed out control freak starting 4 months in advance, that day is usually just a sap on everyone's mental resources. I wonder if things would have been different if her birthday had been in January or something?
Anyway, sounds like you'll have an awesome Christmas Tess! Hope you'll have loads of fun and of course we want to see pictures of the doled up house!!!

My Christmas music list bides its time. I promised myself - no such music before December! Gotta have some limits
But I've already had a taste of gingerbread, saffron buns and other Christmas-ish stuff. While I may not be as enthusiastic as Tessar, I'm looking forward to when the Christmas spirit will present itself in my home

I've seen "julesylte" (sliced meat for sandwiches) in the shops for a long time already.
So long, in fact, that it's expiry date is 7th December. But who cares

NO TIME! IT'S CHRISTMAS, YO?!!?!?
You can breath once right before Thanksgiving, and then as much as you want after Dec 25th, but NOT BETWEEN!!!! HUZZAH!!!! My week is crazy until Thursday, but I'm going to see if I can't snatch a spare hour somewhere to run out and price some Christmas lights. Another happy is that the school books I'll need for my finals finally came in, and I picked them up today! Really happy and relieved about that... |

You like to put a tree in front of your front window too??? My parents only have bedroom front windows and I felt so terrible about the main trees being at the back that I convinced my parents to let me put a tree up in my bedroom so it would sparkle out the front window when people drove by.
Now I have to convince my husband to let me move the couch so we can put the tree in front of our window. It's an old heavy couch, though, so I may get nowhere.
